From the land of haribos.

I always do that and I also did it during the festive periods. I change what I say like, during christmas it was a happy christmas greeting and to the new year, it was happy new year and have a nice day, sometimes it leads to a little conversation, it is fun

With AI technology, the self-checkout machines should have a nice line of patter, or at least a few comments on your purchases "Oh two bottles of gin, are you having a party?"

Hi Shag. Where available I generally use the self checkout - but if I’m served by a human then of course I’m polite and will engage in a brief conversation and wish them a nice day/evening. X

On the rare occasion I use a human operated checkout of course I will talk to the staff.

Sometimes it pays dividends. Many years ago there was a lovely checkout operator in my local supermarket, would always have some banter and it paid off as we ended up having a fling.

Nowadays I tend to use the self scan so the only interaction now is if I win a lucky dip check.

The ones at our local Asda have cameras on them filming you as you scan.

With that technology I really shouldn't have to wait 5 minutes for a real person to come and 'approve' my purchase of some Hooch/Red Bull/Aspirin should I?

Facial recognition software could be used to recognise the fact I'm old enough?

I do think that feedback on your purchases by the machine could be entertaining.

"Ooh - ibuprofen and preparation H ? I told you last week when you bought that butternut squash, some lube and a scented candle to go steady......"

this. The first bit. Or scan a passport and do a Monzo style check.

And can they do a sense check on what needs ID. To date

° mens health

° zero alcohol beer

° a spoon (because it is cutlery and so could be a knife )

To shags question, yes I do. Although try and ask a different question to "how's your day" etc.

They usually say hello first anyway. They have to.

I have a little chat sometimes, which can piss other shoppers off.

I called an elderly lady a miserable old cunt once because of her rudeness over me and the checkout lady chatting.

I always greet them, maybe try and say something to make them smile.

Partly because I like making people smile, but partly because they might be the only person I speak to that day.

I'd consider it rude to continue chatting once the transaction has been completed, if other shoppers are waiting

I've been behind the checkout. So yeah I will greet them, with a sympathetic smile usually. Mainly because they have to deal with the 'Over' Privileged locals.

The amount of abuse I used to get for doing my job, I was working Nights on Checkouts, I would love to have decked a few

It was fun though for a while.

Be kind.

Always be nice to people, unless they do something that actually annoys you.

And I don't mean when they enforce the rules that they get from management, such as trying to get you to sign up for a loyalty card, check your age etc.

I believe in karma.

Be positive to people and get positive vibes in return.
