Good habits

By (user no longer on site) OP

As the new year kicks in many try to get rid of bad habits. Don't smoke, don't drink, don't eat sweets.. all the "No, No, No's!". What about creating good ones or maintaining those you already have? What will you say YES to in 2023?

Thread inspired by an article boosting a myth of 21 days being enough to create a good habit. A study showed that it can take anytime between 18 to 254 days to form new positive behaviours, but on average it is 66, depending on person and circumstances. It doesn't matter if you mess up here and then, as long as you keep going.

My good habit has been starting a day with water. Sometimes I forget, when in rush, but my body and mind thank me when I do stick with it.

In a process of reintroducing others, which I fell out of! Hoping I can trick my mind to persevere.

What is your good habit you have intention to continue or to begin?

That's a dilemma. How are you going to solve it? Make to do list? Do alternative lazy and performing days? Break a day into let's crack on with this shit or get out and live? And then blissful fuck all after ?

Yes. My sleep hygiene is very inconsistent too. Any good tips?

Walking is a bliss. I try every day but Christmas was a lazy one.

What supplements ?

Why do you feel awful?

I remember reading about some military routine for breaking that habit. I might be wrong. Something ringing in my memory.

It only makes sense to me when it's a solid 20 min or so of uninterrupted extra snooze.

I think that's gonna have to be the plan of action , the breaking the day down into segments.

It’s to do with your REM cycles I think, even anything straight after waking up (early thanks to children) makes me feel terrible. I just got up this morn and felt so much better for it.

I'm aiming to stop more and think before I respond. I'm quite an instinctive sort of person and sometimes it's good to just stop, breathe and give myself time to truly process.

I'm also going to meditate daily. Even if it's for only fifteen minutes, it helps still my mind an awful lot.

This should be mine. Working from home more over the last few years has pushed my bed time back later and later - often near 2am as I know I'll still get 6 hours, but know it's not good for me.

None of the habits I try to form are to stop something or to take something away, they're all about adding to my life.

Currently I'm finding 15 minutes a day to spend on self-care. Some days that's about going for a little walk or stepping away from a screen, sometimes it's putting on a face mask or having a chat with a friend, sometimes it's sorting out my nascent floordrobe so my bedroom feels more serene.

I've been doing this for just over a month and it's mad how the effects have snowballed.

Adding the value rather than depriving yourself. I like that and the power of simplicity. 15 minutes of sacred time to embrace things you enjoy or make you feel good - one worth stealing. Glad it helps you.
