I’ve been “dry” for ten years now and it was a life changing decision.

It’s not easy at first and it’s not for everyone.

I now have a couple of high Adrenalin and high energy hobbies and my personal well being both mentally and physically are amazing.

Sorry to crow but I can’t recommend sobriety (for me) highly enough.

Being doing dry January for many years it’s easy, I had a serious issue with drink in my late tens early twenties I decided then I needed to slow down or become alcoholic. Now I only drink at the weekend and haven’t been d*unk in many years.

No. She’ll have a couple of glasses of wine if we go out and maybe a G+t but she always has an available driver.

She may do a dry January as she’s currently suffering from post Christmas “I’m fat and no one loves me!” Syndrome.

I stopped drinking in September. I wasn't a heavy drinker, as in large volume or benders but I drank every day. If I'd had a bad day I'd drink a bit more, or a good day I'd celebrate with a few extra drinks.

I had a general 'unwell' feeling, I felt old and tired. I had flabby bits that I'd not had before.

The worst thing, or the thing that impacted my life the most was I'd become a glass half empty, negative, type of person. Life was just 'grey'

It's taken a while to see and feel the benefits but I'm really starting to feel and act like my old self again, positive, active, and a general feeling that life is good.

It's a personal choice and not for everyone but it's really changed my life!

I have done dry January many times and I actually find it quite easy to do (I'm not a big drinker). However this year I have 2 days this January where I have events on where its gonna be extremely hard NOT to drink - I've also paid in advance for the privilege on one of them. Those 2 events aside I will be dry this January

As someone who works part time in a pub, and someone who loves the whole pub culture, I implore everyone to support thier local.

Dry January is a gimmick and should be discouraged.

The hospitality industry is still struggling after lockdowns. Footfall is no where near pre-pandemic levels. And now with upwards of £4,000 per month estimated energy bills, pubs need all the help they can get.

A recent survey of 4,500 pubs found 85% are considering permanently closing for 2 days a week. And of that 85% at least 40% considering closing all together.

The pub used to be the hub of a community, it was a place to socialise yes, but it was also a place you'd find your local plumber, electrician, builder, mechanic. Some pubs still have this community spirit (glad to say the one I work at does), and that community needs to be protected.

A pub is not just a place to go and get d*unk.

But my nearest pub is 20 minutes away and I over drink in them. Well use to.

Dry January for me is a reset and I bet you make more profit on lemonade then you do on the beer..

How is Dry January a gimmick? That seems like a rather ill-informed opinion.

Also, pubs are not owed our custom. Lots of placing are struggling - doesn't mean we're obliged to give them our money.

Lots of pubs *don't* have the community spirit you talk of any more.

However, you are right - pubs are not just somewhere to get d*unk. Therefore, your whole complaint about Dry January is irrelevant.

If a pub isn't just a place to get d*unk stock a decent range of non alcoholic options and you'll still get trade?

I have had a drink every night for over a year, 2 tins Guinness and 3 whisky usually during week and more at weekends

I find it extremely difficult not to have a drink, some mornings I wake up and say no drink tonight but always end up opening a tin and pouring a nip.

If I can go one night without, I will then try for a full week without.

It doesn’t have to be dry and boring… there are some brilliant 0% alternatives to what you would normally drink

I’m absolutely chuffed for example Guinness now do a 0.0, Gordon’s do one for gin, bud, Heineken, becks, ect ect

Many good wines as well…….

The other good thing about 0.0’s is that they also tend to be a lot…. Lot lower on calories!!!

160 calories in a 440ml can of Guinness…….. 70 calories in a can of Guinness 0.0%
