Your year in the gym

Somewhere

How was your year in the gym?

Did you hit your goals, surpass them, or fail miserably?

Unfortunately I failed miserably.

After serious injury in 2021 I was very briefly back to full strength early 2022 equalling all my best lifts and on course to break an 800kg total in powerlifting competition, thus qualifying to compete at European and World championships.

Unfortunately a health scare and various body parts giving me signs they no longer want to do that has forced me to reevaluate.

10+ years of competing has come to an end and I'm a bit lost.

Staying in shape now and may go for a bench only competition as those body parts work fine but it's not the same.

Wow I’m sorry to hear that man!

It’s been good this year. I’ve stayed consistent and been training, pretty much every week. I took 3 weeks out in December and went back today… I felt that, but it did me good to have a rest and reset, I think.

Welcome Most of my year was happily spent out of the gym as you can see from my rotund figure.

My goals include staying out of jail, out of hospital and out of the grave. I've crushed it for the last 6 years.

We collect lost souls around here.

"I knew there was somewhere I was meant to go this year!! "

I took my Fat ass to the Caribbean and swam 100 strokes every day.. that's enough gym for me.

I see a trainer nearly every week that way my body parts keep working.

I also lift heavy shit in my supermarket job 2 days a week.

We both did reasonably well.

Just maintenance really at our age.

Been a struggle last few weeks though with the cold and darkness.

We’re better when we know we’re going to be naked outside in company!

I didn't have any set goals but just tried to steadily improve on all my lifts to build muscle. I'm a bit worried that I may not be able to keep it up much longer with my progression without going through a proper bulking phase but really can't bear putting on the extra fat along with the muscle but we'll see how it goes...

Mines been mostly about staying in shape, getting a bit stronger and keeping healthy really.

I find the gym more of a stress release than anything else, always feel a lot better after going.

I gave up the idea of a 6 pack a long time ago

I bailed during Covid 1.0 and never went back. I got into cycling for cardio and just throw some modest weights around at home for toning. Some stretching exercises and that's about it these days.

I'd take those thighs and bum over a 6 pack any day. I've never had a 6 pack in my life and the thought of trying to achieve it in my over 40's fills me with dread.

Sorry to hear that, OP. Hope you find something to fill the gap - must be very hard to adjust.

I'm going to be glass half full, which I find hard when it comes to me and the gym. I've been consistent, sticking closely to my programmes, and making progress. Numbers haven't raced up, but I'm at the point now where some gains are quite incremental on the big lifts and I'm ok with that.

But have taught an old dog some new tricks and focussed much more on Olympic weightlifting this year and have made real strides technically with the lifts, which I'm pleased about.

Looking forward to next year, but do want to bring my body fat down a little so probably need to up the cardio a little

Yep, that's the worry too! Never had to lose any kind of weight before and wonder if I would even know how
