I went for a coffee earlier, in fact one before and one after some shopping I had to do. I must say it never astonishes me how much bad service and lack of hygiene we tolerate in this country. The table was supposedly clean but you wouldn't think so, the knives and other cutlery also filthy and lots of debris on the window sill, not to mention the floor. I had some wipes and cleaned the table and the cutlery. It was not very busy to start with, three staff mostly chatting. Instead of chatting, pick the blooming cloth up and go around and clean up properly. Before anyone comes on to tell me they are not paid for that and only get paid peanuts,I am sorry but that's not an excuse. I worked in cafes and bars as a student and there is no way I would just stand around and not make sure everything was cleaned properly. We just seem to show apathy and accept these things. I have on ocassion raised it with staff but I could not really be botheted today and in any case, seems to make no difference.Thanks for listening, I still feel disgusted but a lot better now it's off my chest

We have noticed this especially in Starbucks where clearing tables seems to be very low on their priority, we rarely go there. We usually ask nicely if they could clear and clean the table before we sit down if it hasn't been done

I don't blame them at all. I have spent my entire working life in hospitality. Not paid enough to have any quality of life. Expected to put the needs of the company above their own. Long shitty hours and not even a thank you. The rich get richer by exploiting their lowest paid workers with wages that don't meet the basic needs of the poor and unions are fighting for a better life for the poor. Trust me, the franchise owner earning millions a year is not going to make your coffee or clean your table either. Sorry you feel your experience was unfulfilling but imagine being them.

As an ex hospitality person, I’m agreeing, I’ve been wondering when hospitality will be joining the strikes, the treatment staff are given is horrendous at times, no human deserves that environment

I know that there is a huge shortage of staff within hospitality. I understand from family who work within the industry that treatment and wages very much depends on the employer.

I'm here to say, it might just be that cafe. I'm not sure we are any more apathetic as a country!

I have lots of coffees out and way more than not, the staff and service are great. If a cafe's not clean or the service not good, you don't have to go there and 'tolerate' it - vote with your feet...

I’m surprised you ever get hired with that attitude.

I only work for the best companies and whenever i experience poor service I let them know. Staff are often constrained by bad management & policy but someone somewhere needs a kick up the arse. The UK is especially lazy regarding service , the same brands in other countries have much better service

You could have just left and gone somewhere where you were happier with the service and cleanliness of the place. I wouldn't have stayed if I thought the place was that dirty.
