Peter Tupper has a great book "A Lover's Pinch: A Cultural History of Sadomasochism". What needs to be remembered is that ordinary peoples lives were not recorded. It is only since the 1950s that ordinary folks view of sex/ kink were recorded. What we have before that is the writing of the rich and noteworthy. It should also be remembered kink acts were criminal as well as immoral so writers were discreet about what they did. People burnt their diaries or their surviving relatives did.

There are records from criminal cases and all that entails.

Human emotions have not changed much so there has always been kink but not necessarily as we know it, and some periods in history were more permissive than others. It also needs to be noted the restricted position of women in society, and only wealth afforded privacy and the space to carry out indecent acts regularly and the education to record it.

Some basic Google revealed:

Ancient Mesopotamia is one of the first known advanced human civilizations, and it is where our first records of BDSM originate from. If you have no idea where Ancient Mesopotamia was located, it was in the Middle East near Iraq should you view it on a modern map.
