"Reports that 22 people have died following medical tourism visits to Turkey since 2019. What's going on here guys?" Don't do it Tom. You're 64 years of age and having Yeti like feet is normal for a man of your age.

"Turkey statistics say 640,000 medical tourists in 2021 alone. Makes for a 0.003% risk of death if all 22 were counted in that year as opposed to across nearly 4 years. That's better odds on survival than most things." All 22 were English. You do the maths....

" All 22 were English. You do the maths...." Oh, fair point. UK apparently makes up between 3 and 7% of medical tourism globally, so if we say 5% that gets it up to 0.06% if all the deaths were in one year, it was across more than 3 so closer to 0.02%. Still better odds than elective surgeries in the UK from the look of it.

"They go out there...have complications them go to the NHS here ... What's going on here guys?" Nothing new here Tom, been happening for years with all surgery conducted overseas. Some result from being discharged too early, sometimes back on a plane the next day. How many of us would have a surgical procedure in the UK then jump on a plane to Spain the next day. Some have made a bad decision on choosing surgeon or clinic but does that mean we have bad decision making as a criteria for healthcare. Think 90% of us would be refused if that was the case. Bad decision on alcohol. Bad decision on smoking. Bad decision on drugs, recreational or prescribed. Bad decision on diet, exercise etc The list goes on and on.

"I can totally understand why people do it. After having weightloss surgery & losing 10st, the excess skin I was left with made me feel worse than when it was padded out with fat! I couldn't possibly afford UK cosmetic prices, so I went to Poland for a total of 6 surgeries over 3 years. I worked 2nd jobs & saved like a demon to pay the 15k I'm cash as I went along. In the UK, I probably would have spent 35k!! The one thing I don't get is why people don't research the surgeon they're looking at, or the risks during & after the procedures. That isn't easy when these people aren't covered by the GMC, but it is possible to get an idea. " Read your profile, best I've read in ages, coughed up my tea with the rich tea comment. Bet you are brilliant company especially at initial social meets. Liz. Xx

Some taxidermist in Ankara sets up shop as a 'Dentist' then the NHS pays to sort it out.

"If complications arise then best at home... That's exactly why they come home for the NHS Tom. If people have treatment abroad they should have insurance to cover problems. " So what about health conditions caused by smoking, drinking & obesity? Or accidents through extreme sports? Or caused some kind of accident through neglect or misadventure? The NHS don't judge- they just treat. It's what we pay for. Someone who has had an issue post treatment has every right to be seen on the NHS. I myself had a mishap when I ripped open 20cms of stitches after a butt lift. A complete accident & the NHS were wonderful. I also needed a course of antibiotics when I got a minor infection after one of my surgeries- it wasn't down to poor treatment, just bad luck but again, my local surgery were only too glad to help.
