Weird Family Traits

Anyone have any thing food wise that is normal in your family but weird to another? Kind of a “don’t knock it til you’ve tried it” would you be willing to try someone’s family thing?

Mine is (of course it isn’t weird at all) Squashed Shredded Wheat with butter and jam, or honey on it…. Squash the biscuits with hot water between two plates, then just spread on your butter and whatever else.

Tomato soup with baked beans added. Makes a great meal if you haven’t much else in the house or you can’t be bothered to cook

Let’s hear yours

Bread sauce.

I cannot even be any more terse than that. It's an unavoidable foible.

Whisked evaporated milk. I hated it but my mum used to deploy the Magimix at every opportunity

What does it make?

I’ve heard you can put a tin in a pan of water to make instant caramel

When we were kids, my parents would make a perfectly normal roast dinner, and then insist on adding breaded baked onion rings at the end. Bizarre. They stopped doing it, but I always found it strange.

Tomato sauce on a roast dinner.

Physical: flat male nipples, kind of our version of the Habsburg jaw I guess.

Not for many years, but when I was very young, mum used to get a mars bar out of the fridge, slice it and share it between 3 of us

They were bigger then but even so

Bubbly evaporated milk basically. No idea why mum thought whisking it would make it any nicer

Isn't whipped evaporated milk the main part of a "Gypsy" tart filling? All time favourite school dinner pudding!

A town near you

Not unusual but we always had bread pudding for dessert on a Sunday evening.

Was the only sweet treat we got.

Mam would use up all the stale bread by boiling it in milk and sugar with a dash of vanilla essence. Was the culinary highlight of the week.

My dad eats weetabix with butter spread on them

And I went through a phase in my teens of putting food colouring in random things...I'd serve up things like blue mashed potato or green yorkshire puddings.

If your mouth is getting dry, you need to put more butter on.

Forget the sugar sandwich, move up to the Golden Syrup sandwich, taught to me by my late father who still had all his own teeth, its perfection
