i thought the exhaust was gone but it was actually the head gasket failing because it was made of aluminium.

The Fiat Multipla may not have looked pretty but boy was it a practical car.

Seated 6 fully grown men in comfort,very economical and reliable.

A company I ran some time ago had a Multipla from new to take and collect drivers after delivering or collecting fleet commercial vehicles,did 200.000 miles with no problem, It finally died when someone tried to drive it through 3 ft of water.

Also the whole point of a fiat 500 is that it's a super mini not something the size of a London cab.

I have been unfortunate enough to drive one and it's pants the worst headlights ever, honestly I would have seen the road better if I'd held up a candle whilst driving.

Series 3 was when the rot set in...described by a L/R salesman, that I knew fairly well, to me as....front end of a Range Rover, mid section of a Discovery, back end of a Transit! Not far wrong either!

Totally agree on the Scorpio. Such a shame as otherwise a great car. The back end wasn't that bad though.

Funny thing is though, that around that time, I think Mercedes went for a similar approach with large round headlamps though they somehow managed to pull it off.

It's a matter of economics

Invariably, badly designed and poorly manufactured cars are very cheap ones; maufacturers cannot be overly concerned by the aesthetics of a vehicle when the profit margins are wafer thin.

Expensive cars generally look more pleasing to the eye, because they can be.

The vehicle that has been voted the worst looking car, in the US, was the AMC Pacer, built by the now defunct, and for a reason, American Motors Corporation.

There are loads of British examples, from an era when the UK car industry was on its last legs before being swallowed up by foreign, mostly Asian, competitors.

Mismanagement lies at the core of the demise of most businesses and industries.

Bloody hell! I'd almost forgotten that one.

Made in East Germany with a two stroke engine and some kind of freewheeling device so you couldn't use engine braking.

Quite quick off the mark in a straight line but were really awful in every other way.

Other notable ones from that era were the NSU RO80 quite futuristic in design but hamstrung with a totally useless rotary engine. And who remembers "Moskvitch" predated Lada as the first Russin built car imported into the UK.

Just thinking back to my early days in the car trade in the 70's. There was a lot of shit knocking about then.

Another one that springs to mind was the Alfasud. That just had to be the number one rust bucket ever, and anything Lancia.

Oh! And don't forget the early Nissans (Datsun's as they were known then) The early Bluebirds just fell to bits, but at least they were reliable. The Cherry Europe also fell to bits but the engine was shit as well.

The British motor industry didn't exactly cover itself in glory in those days but we weren't the only ones.

A friend of mine bought an ex Police T5 Estate and drove it for a few years . He now has a Skoda Octavia VRS Estate and says the performance matches that of the Volvo. It is interesting see howm many Police forces are now running the Skoda VRS Estates.

Except for the bit about the shit engine. The A series was a pretty decent lump in comparison to some of the others designed round the late 50’s/ early 60’s- not many have a production span of almost 40 years. I modified a 1300 unit to go in my mini, medium lift race cam, twin SU’s, ported head with seated valves and triple branch manifold to a drainpipe exhaust- I could also remove an A Series engine, work on something and have it back in on the same day.

So, In a car weighing not much north of half a tonne, with those mods, it squashed you back in the seats and started every time. Had a friend who fitted a modified Metro Turbo unit in his stripped mini, that pissed on every hot hatch in the area.

Like most cars, reliability was also mainly down to how well you looked after it. Don’t knock the little block, still going strong in thousands of car’s worldwide
