Is bread sauce on anyone's list this Christmas? I don't see the attraction with this insipid and uninspiring food. Granted, it's not the traditional fayre on the Christmas dining table.

Or have I missed a trick? Am I doing this sauce a disservice?

You have obviously never tasted my personal recipe bread sauce made with garlic, chilli, sesame oil, wholemeal bread... Possibly I should trademark and sell it as yet another product of TheDoggingCompany™? I love bread sauce! Even better the next day when you make an ultimate Boxing Day toastie and you can dip it in that and gravy. So good with roast potatoes and horseradish sauce as well.

Bread sauce is an essential ingredient. No sunday roast or Christmas dinner is complete without it.

In fact, not having bread sauce makes the meal inedible poison.

It's that important.

I'm always getting thrown out of restaurants but it's a hill I am willing to die on.

Anybody like pineapple on their pizzas?

Most definitely should be on a xmas dinner plate. Ideally made by hand, cooked with an onion spiked with cloves in the centre, although if I end up doing a loner meal for one on xmas day, then I'll usually cheat and use a packet mix. Consistency needs to be just right, not too stodgy (add milk), not runny (leave to cook longer, or add some breadcrumbs or a touch of cornflour.

This year I shall be going to my sisters again for xmas day. The bread sauce will be on the table, cooked the way mum always used to.

I guess it dates back to the war years, when food rationing meant everything had to be made to go further. Bread and milk were available, so were turned into an extra condiment. If it's cooked right, it doesn't need to be bland.

A Toastie, now there's an idea! I love the stuff but I'm the only person in my house, I don't know if that says more about me or everyone else's lack of taste

That doesn't make sense! A bread sauce toastie is just bread with bread inside it. It's a bread sandwich.
