Irritation. When it flares up, how do you handle it? Are you a sit with it and wait for the emotions to pass sort of person? Do you go from 1-100 in a fit of rage? What's the best method of calming your irk?

Hi Meli. Hope you’re not too irritated?

I find it helps to take myself out of the situation - “flight” as it were. Then I can have a proper think about it rather than flying off the handle. Then I have a little mantra that helps me every time.

“I never did mind the little things”

Hope that can help a bit but if you need a rant I’ve had the day from hell… quite literally… so feel free to message me for one

I try to just focus my mind on something else. Try doing something I enjoy or speaking to a friend. Eventually you just forget about whatever was irritating you

Flash in the pan with me.

It takes a lot to irritate me, but it comes with a bang and then is gone.

I don't harbour ill feelings either. If someone is really irritating me on a long term basis I cut them out of my life; or I blank it out if it's family.

It takes a lot to get me to boiling point, I sit and simmer for a while, but when it does…

Hell hath no fury like a dickhead scorned!

As for calming it down… it depends on whats caused it.

Lego can be a good mood calmer.

Music as well.

Other times a bit of righteous vengeance goes a long way.

I tend to go off and cry and/or bottle things up.

I wish I could say I'm always in control of my emotions but hell no. When I'm irritated those who live with me know about it. I do admit to them how I'm feeling so they will give me a wide birth. Recently I have been really trying not to flare up so quickly, count to 10 before I blow, walk out of the room and calm down. It's not always easy, but as I say I'm trying.

It's something I'm awful at and need to get better at and it's the same with all my emotions, really. I just feel overwhelmed with it all at once which goes from ranting, getting irritated with other small things that I don't need to get worked up over and then I'm calm and just get on with it. It's honestly exhausting and probably the worst way of dealing with it because even when you're calm, what you've done or even said remains.

Ach, eruptions aren't good but they are understandable.

I'm trying to be better by posting it into this random void of horny, bored or poo-ing people. I can almost predict what my friends will say if I message them. So instead it's on here and it's kind of stopping it becoming a Big Thing.

See, this is quite a rational, mature response. The sort of calm logic I wish I had. I'm not sure if it's the Italian blood but I feel emotions far too keenly. Not harbouring ill wishes is very healthy - they don't serve you or them. So you need to find a way to move past it.

I've always been this way. I'm not much of an arguer because not much pisses me off, and I can hold my temper.

Once I pop though all hell is unleashed-for about a minute-and then I'm cool again.

Being angry takes up too much of my emotional energy.

Ok

I thought this was regarding advice on soothing creams and ointments!

I'm quite easy. If someone irritates me then normally il just shrug it off and forget it.

I'm generally fine with any online abuse but if my wife and I have a big argument, 99 times I ignore it and just annoy her by not caring... but otherwise il probably lock myself in the bathroom and sob my little eyes out in secret then all is well again.

Do you ever angry cry? It's a particularly irritating habit of mine. Like I can't quite process or get out all these emotions so instead my brain thinks "I know, I'll make her cry, sure she read it's cathartic somewhere".

I've already not picked up one call so I don't vent unfairly because my instinctive response and heightened emotions might result in me not being fair. So I'm going to sit and post crap on here. And hope that people I fancy don't read this and think fuck no.

I am a slow burn type of person, it will irk me for a bit, before I go from 0 to 10000.

As for calming me down, no idea how to do that now. Years ago. I would thrash the bike. After a few miles, you get it out of your system and start to ride the bike nicely.

Oh god yes! I do the angry cry… the frustrated cry… the fuck you, you asshole cry

It’s weird but once I’ve cried I do feel better… lighter. And can process things more clearly.

And it’s good to take time out for yourself… be selfish! I’m trying to do this more as I tend to let my emotions get the better of me.

Nothing wrong with posting crap either… and my inbox is always open if you need to vent… I’m a pretty good listener and can (occasionally) offer advice that isn’t total bollocks

I'm so much less fiery than I used to be. Nowadays I tend to just tell people bluntly that they're irritating me and why. I'm happy to discuss it calmly, but I'm going to let them know that I think they're being an arse.

It's a rare occasion when I lose my rag, but when I do I explode... I have a long fuse, but a viscous temper. If I get to that point I need to let it out, then take myself off to calm down alone.

I have angry cried at work...I told my ex boss that I wasn't upset, it was just the sheer effort of not headbutting him because he wasn't worth getting sacked over.

I have no limits once I'm angry, but it happens exceptionally rarely. I can think of two occasions in my life.

Most of the time, I feel no more than icy, Parnassian contempt, Nietzsche-style, for the mouth-breathing, oxygen-thieving, crawling, slack-jawed üntermenschen who try to thwart me.

Ahem. That's actually a little better. Thank you for the opportunity, Meli. Hope your irritation fades like a winter frost in spring sunshine.

I used to be that person who flew off the handle pretty quickly. It took me a long time to change that and I'm a lot more chilled these days. I've learnt to take a breath, pick my battles and not to react to things based on my own expectations. If something has really irritated me I will voice it later on when my heads clear and not in that moment.
