From several couples I've spoken to about it, it's by exactly what you describe here. It starts with dirty talk during sex, describing scenarios, etc and evolves from there. Maybe the next step for you guys could be some roleplay in the bedroom? Use of dildos as if they were other people? Maybe going to a hotel and roleplaying the stranger scenario? Watching porn together of swinging / multiple people scenarios? Loads of ways to explore boundaries and fantasies. Lots of communication as well, obviously.
