My Lords, Ladies and Genital-men...Are you made of the sterner stuff that hankers for traditional festive names?

I am. I much prefer the endearing term "Father Christmas". Why do we refer to 'him' as "Santa Claus"?

Enlighten me.

Manchester(ish).

The name, Santa Claus, was stated to evolve from St Nick's Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas, which is translated as the Dutch name for St. Nicholas.

And it's all based on a Bishop who lived in fourth century in Asia Minor who dropped some gold coins through the chimney of a very poor family with 12 daughters. They landed in the stockings that were drying by the fire. His remains arr now housed in the Bassilica di San Nicola in Bari

Father Christmas here. Santa sounds like an adopted American term
