Could be a frozen condensate - if you can boil a kettle, let it cool slightly & then defrost the oipe outside with the hot water then reset the boiler hopefully that’ll help

If the condensate is blocked/frozen it will normally make a gurgling sound before shutting down

The weather can be bad and harsh at times

My problem is the sun hits the front but the rear doesn’t get it at this time of year

I’m hopeful as it’s only minus 3 now

Just think of the money you're saving at the moment then. All us other folks paying through the nose just to keep warm. Even buying new boiler will be cheaper than a heating bill this winter.

Mine isn't working this morning. E28 error code on a Baxi, frozen condensate pipe. I'm not there to do anything about it, but my folks are going to meet my plumber there to check things over

Check the condensate line and tank. If the line is frozen, the boiler cuts out. It's happening a lot in this weather.

Had a brilliant gas boiler for 4 decades. Heated the house well . Ran for two periods of a few hours each.

All it had was a gas control valve, a timer and a (boiler) thermostat. Nothing really to go wrong. Way before the microprocessor era. It even warmed the kitchen and bathroom via the chimney, none of that balanced flue lark, warming up the neighbourhood.

Then (not in my house) along came all the boilers which were too clever for their own good. Good for the boiler trade and not much else.

When the gas supplier wanted to put me on a daily standing charge I told them to get stuffed and they eventually disconnected the supply.

The boiler is still in situ and is so elementary that I could probably burn c*ke in it if I could sort out an ash pan!

I have yet to meet anyone who hasn't had problems with modern boilers, especially in this sort of weather.

On a parallel note, my freezer compartment is not cooling enough at the moment because it only cools when the fridge thermostat cuts in. Currently the kitchen (at night) is colder than the inside of the fridge so the fridge thinks it is cool enough.

I'm bggrd if I'm going to heat the kitchen when I'm not in it but might have to just to keep stuff frozen!

This legacy boiler you speak of would have been at best 66-67% efficient when new, the modern stuff is 97-98% efficient. That's we're all the technology goes in fuel efficiency

Feel your pain OP. Mine went a couple of weeks ago. Took 4 very cold days before I could get someone out, but he did a great job and all ok again now.

I just can't afford to use the bloody thing!

Yeah, but it paid for itself many times over by never needing expensive servicing or replacing.

It came with the house so I didn't have to buy it and I've still got it and, because of its cast iron design heritage, cometh the hour when civilisation falls apart it could be used with a number of imaginative fuel sources including muck from the horse I will need to pull my car along!

If you think that last sentence is pushing it, my grandparents saw bread and post delivered that way in Jersey during the German occupation.

And the result is:

My plumber can't do a permanent repair until the ice in the pipe has thawed out, so he's disconnected it all and put a plastic tub under the hole this has created and it'll need to be emptied twice a day until it can be fixed properly.

Not great, but my boiler is back on and my folks are going to empty the tub whilst I'm away
