Severe Weather Emergency Protocol. Report the homeless for help!

A couple of things I wasn’t aware of previously but thought I would share.

Due to the recent sub zero condition, London (and perhaps other parts of U.K.) have been placed on S.W.E.P, which is designed to protect vulnerable rough sleepers and help bring them in from the cold. During this local authorities will provide extra/emergency accommodation to try and prevent the homeless sleeping outside which would lead to extra deaths from the extreme weather.

Also I found out the public can report homeless adults online via Streetlink.org.uk and this group can reach out to local authorities and outreach groups who can visit and may be able to provide someone support and bring them inside from the cold.

(Hope the mods don’t mind me posting this bit).

I for one feel extremely lucky to have a roof over my head, after having a jolly time enjoying the blizzard during the day. But would never wish to find myself having to sleep outside through it!

Thanks for sharing this, I wasn't aware.

It breaks my heart to see people homeless, particularly at this time of year.

I know there are a great number of factors involved in many cases and help can be hard to get or even give but we must try.

The problem is knowing which homeless people are genuinely homeless. There are some homeless people in a town near me and they have been offered housing but refused it.

I can't imagine ever not having anywhere to go. I am very grateful of the life I have. Our son even says that we eat like kings and live in a palace compared to some people. It is heartbreaking when you hear the reasons why some are sadly on the streets.

As awful as the pandemic was I hope that a positive it brought was the ability for some people to find a way off the street. I do support homeless people with warm drinks or warm food in this weather. Money can be misused sadly.

There, but for the grace of God, go I.

That's due to a system designed deliberately to kill off people with chronic mental health issues. You'll notice that for the last 12yrs nobody gave a shiny sh*te. Hence, bigger problem than ever, nearly 400k prematurely dead.

Will it take an actual Purge that might affect the middle class to get people on the streets or what???

Political awareness is a social responsibility now imho.

Every healthy adult doing nothing shares culpability.

Would you like them to save up donations to put a deposit down on a house?!

Or is it using alcohol and drugs less harmful, to ease their considerable pain, that you're unhappy about?

Do the poor & destitute not deserve to feel relief or even perhaps occasional pleasure?!

Just know this. Every single one of them are suffering due to historical trauma. The cure for this is not pharmaceutical, its makes no money. That's why it doesn't feature in the NHS. Methadone makes money. Anti psychotics and anti depressants make all the money.....

Somatics is something your gp will never tell you about. It's criminal, retarded and breaks my heart

I don’t really follow this. The NHS doesn't profit from drugs. The profiteers are the pharmaceutical companies who have contracts to supply medication to the NHS, or sell to the consumer directly.

As far as I am aware the entire country is covered by the severe cold weather protocol at the moment. Sometimes people that are street homeless are not able to access emergency accommodation because they may not fit the criteria such as having local connections, They may have a dog, They may have already been kicked out of emergency accommodation for inappropriate behaviour. May not be able to meet the criteria because they are not drug or alcohol free but This protocol ignores all of that because it's simply is life saving.

It applies for entire U.K yes, but depends on how particular regions are affected by temperature/weather.

If a forecast shows three consecutive days of zero or below, or there are extreme weather conditions experienced/expected then the protocol will be set in motion for that region.

Walking through the blizzard on Sunday in central london, it was terrible to see people sitting on the floor freezing their assess off, or trying to get shelter from the elements with a bit of cardboard.

little house on the praire

Unfortunately there are some homeless people that don't want support. I live in a small town and we don't have homeless people here but we did have one man and he was given a flat and then gave it up to sleep in the churchyard.

It breaks my heart to see them. There is a lot where my son lives but I think they have somewhere to go during the day as you see lots of sleeping bags and belongings but no people

Yes I know! Pretty much the whole of the UK is in this situation right now which is why I said what I did.

I will say those people choosing to sit out will have made that choice because they will have been made aware of the cold weather protocol which in London has been in place for over 8 days already.

Sorry I live under a rock and only tracking what is happening in London. Kidding of course.

Who knows what headspace they are in, or if they are even mentally present. Or if a support team has been able to reach out to them yet.

If people want to report someone they come across for help, the site is mentioned in my initial post. This is what I ultimately wanted to share with everyone.

Emmaus pronounced ee-may-us is a French charity that tackless homelessness head on....

The first British Emmaus Community appeared in Cambridge in 1992. It was set up by Selwyn Image, who had been a student volunteer at an Emmaus Community in Paris. The charity provides formerly homeless people with a home and work, usually collecting, sorting and reselling donated furniture and household goods. Emmaus UK acts as a central resource to local Emmaus Communities across the UK.[3] As of September 2016, there are 28 Emmaus Communities operating in the UK, with others under development. These communities provide accommodation and meaningful work for formerly homeless people.

There is a brilliant village outside Carlton, in Beds. They have a cafe, a bric brac shop and in the other building, furniture and larger items.

This is a brilliant idea and we need more of them.

"Aid not trade", well some times you need both.

We've been here on a regular basis since before the pandemic.

i've seen their work in France first hand. They certainly do know how to develop a work ethic. Their Xmas day dinner for the staff was a 12 course affair, with lobster!

Even day release prisoners worked on site too.
