Scientists are sequenceing the DNA of hundreds of children to help manage their health and spot dangerous inherited genes and ways to treat future diseases. Noble intentions but ethically and moraly could this be used in the future by despot countries to breed a Master Race.

Would you want to know if you were likely to develop an incurable degenerative disorder in later life? I don't think I'd want to live with that hanging over me.

The idea is that they spot it early and treat early..

But then would some despot nations want to euthanise if there was no cure ..

It's a scary future

Agreed however information is power and if you know that you have certain risk factors there are often things that can be done to limit those.

I agree with this particularly the medically assisted euthanasia laws in Canada. That is rather worrying and also the fact they have now added mental health conditions to the list of medical diagnosis that means you can ask for medical teams to end your life. I know this is going off track slightly but this is wonderful technology but also terrifying at the same time.

No it couldn’t.

Selective breeding has been done with race horses for several generations. After all that messing about where a good stallion’s semen is worth more than gold, ounce for ounce, where has it got us?

Nowhere.

The times for a horse race now are within a second or so of what they were 10 generations earlier.

In human athletics, huge increases have taken place in a relatively short time, just by better training. If I was running a despot country, I’d say fuck off to selective breeding in 60 years for barely any gain and hello to a decent training programme and results in 2 years.

A second could be the difference between first and third in the Derby and of course .. the prize money

Yes, but it’s not exactly a master race, is it? A second or two faster over 3 miles and it takes several generations to get there.

Get your soldiers on a training course, put steroids on their cornflakes and you’d get 10 times the benefit in a tenth of the time.

Selective breeding isn’t worth the trouble for anything other than animals

Who is Tom to argue with that logic ... ?
