I’d give it ago, if the situation arose. Sort of know the logistics of it. But I think it would be classed as lucky crashing rather than a landing.

Yes. But then again I did fly gliders when I was a kid/teen so do have quite a bit of an idea. As long as someone radios me what speed/height I need to be and how the thrust control works we're good to go.

I'd get us down safely.

There are several recorded instances of untrained passengers being taught to land a small plane when the pilot collapsed or died.

The more sophisticated the aircraft the more unlikely an untrained person would be able to land safely; taking off would not be a problem, but getting back down is a different matter.

I have taken several flying lessons in Cessna and Piper aircraft, and had once intended to get a PPL:private pilots licence

It's not that difficult; as in most aspects of life, keeping calm and composed and listening attentively to an expert is the means of increasing the likelihood of success.

Decades ago the Hawker Siddeley Trident aircraft had an automatic landing system; theoretically it would be simply a matter of switching in on!

I worked as cabin crew for 2 seasons. Used to regularly go in the flight deck on night flights to pass the time. I remember one captain telling me if you can use the radio you can land the plane. Emergency frequency is 121.500. Somebody will talk you through what to press and what to pull.

I tried this in my console a couple of days ago.

I can land 3/4 easily. So you’d better hope your in a flight where I’d crashed my last one I tried to save.

I taught my mum to do that and she passed her test first time at 75. I did something slightly different to the way instructors teach it. Move your car halfway past the length of the parked car. It gives you more time to turn in.

I flew Concord London to New York on flight simulator a few years ago, took off and landed intact. So yes I would give it a go with radio help

If it was a choice try and land or crash in a fireball it is no choice surely.

Quite a few years ago a friend of mine put in a bid to the British Airways dream flight and won for 4 of us to have a session in a zero hours 747 simulator at Cranfield. I did one take off and 2 landings. Admittedly thrust control was on automatic but i managed to follow the ils glide slope to safely land. Twice. Tge problem was on the ground your feet control the left snd right braking so keeping it straight on the runway was tricky.

However, when one looks at the case of the Boeing 737 Max; even trained pilots were unable to cope with those aircraft, because Boeing had inadequately briefed client airlines about the fundamental changes it had made to the alignment of the engines and the external sensors.

Two full planeloads were killed: the planes flew into the ground because the pilots were unable to fight the controls, and had been inadequately briefed about Boeing's new system on the 737 Max.

Crucially, Boeing Inc had too cosy a relationship withe the regulatory FAA authority statutorily tasked with overseeing Max operating system changes.

No pilot could have safely landed the Boeing 737 Max!
