Supermarkets launch christmas price war

With 19p veg offer, aldi, lidl and ainsbury’s have kicked off the annual price battle on christmas vegetables, offering bags of sprouts, carrots, parsnips and potatoes for just 19p.

The price deals, which include swedes and cabbages at 19p each, come despite concerns about rising costs for farmers in the uk amid, what is your view of it, should the prices be so low talking into account that it is more expensive for the farmers?

They are probably scared of getting left with too much unsold stock and need to shift it.

Farmers will still charge the rate trey need and SM take a hit on some lines and recoup on others

As much as I’d like to see prices fall across the board, when supermarkets cut their prices, I believe it’s often the farmer/producer/supplier who is squeezed so the retailer retains their profit margins.

That's very wrong indeed. I think Clarkson was in the news lately saying that we should be paying about double for groceries

I really wouldn’t concern yourselves about it

What they loose on the veg they make 5x on the meat

As someone already said they don’t want to have anything left as it will cost to dispose of it

So even if they sell it for 1p it’s still profitable for them

And just to put another side to it most of the produce comes from abroad anyway as the uk farmers market is to expensive for likes of big supermarket chains

Herron's are promoting a complete Christmas dinner package for £15. In the section selling it they'd put up newspaper cuttings showing an article ranking it the best out a selection of supermarket offering.

Me thinks the gloves are off this Christmas.

And out of that 19p. The farmer probably gets around 1-2p profit, supplier fees 5p, costs and haulage 6p, profit 6p to shop.

Like most things a large portion of items get thrown away, at a cost to the original supplier or owner. So the farmer looses even more.

Items like food should be forced to display costs of how much each party makes or gets.
