Have mine on for hour in morning and hour in eve just to stop the house getting damp! It's 13 at mo! Wear a oodie to keep me warm! Have asthma! But it's not really a case of saving a few pounds! As actually have to b able to afford the bill and if have heating on will b way more than an extra few pounds x

Please everyone don't be alarmed. Pensioners with a bis pass have been generously advised that they may ride around all day on buses and stay warm, everyone else must find their nearest 'warm hub' (I think that's the cheerful name councils are giving them) and sit in one of them. Remember the war!

Best advice that works I have had about keeping warm is

Layer up with lose fitting clothes so it traps in warm air

Don’t have your shoes too tight

Eat a larger portion as your body will burn more calories to keep warm

Try and keep your clothes clean as dirt will cause them to be colder

Oh and always have a flask of warm drink

There’s certain heating systems like nibe exhaust air heat recovery that need the house to be above 16 degrees. If they drop below this they use the immersion element to heat the house up first which can cost a fortune

I open windows slightly on the "open but locked" setting every morning. Keep them open as long as possible. Not too bad if no wind and sun is shining like today. Good for ventilation and health. I wear extra layers and feeling quite snug at the mo.

Mine has been on 16/17 degrees for five hours a day total on and off on a timer and it cost me nearly 100 quid last month, it's bloody ridiculous and i dread to think what its going to be like now its getting even colder, jumpers and blankets and hot water bottles for us the rate its going

It worries me to hear that people simply can't afford to heat their homes. Governments need to act. People's health will suffer. People's homes will suffer from damp, mold, rot, burst pipes etc. If heating bills do come down financial help will be required to repair the damage to buildings and the NHS.

I've heard of these, not used them as yet. Tbh I probs can't be bothered with measuring/cutting them to fit - would they save that much heat? Give roughly an extra 5mins of warmth once the radiators are turned off? I'll stick to my extra cardi and wooly hat for now

They do sound like something that should come with radiators as a standard - supposedly reflecting heat so your room is warmer and use less, but as you say, something that you look at, wonder about and skip by. They seem a cheap fit if they work long term... and it's booties for me

I should be getting mine but a error on my smart meter means I've lost numerous top ups and have to wait for a voucher. It also only covers 2 weeks electricity anyway

Oh my theory brings in the Ukrainian/Russian war, elitist governments and the energy companies all working together for their own good. Might just be me but I struggle seeing it as coincidence that since Russia attacked prices started rising and while governments are talking about trying to stop climate change their building new coal mines and banning on shore wind farms…

It also only covers 2 weeks electricity anyway you can top up online. That's how I do mine"
I've had an error for over two months which means that top ups don't go on. Thankfully I had both my meters in credit by a few hundred quid. I've been assured it will be fixed soon.. (they said that in September)

Not a lot of use if you can't afford to turn the radiators on.

What I have got, though, are some large foil windscreen protectors which I lay on the floor or furniture inside sunny windows to reflect some of the sun's heat further into the room.

Central heating is a very modern thing. I'm not that old and when I was a kid we didn't have Central heating or double glazing. On top of that the winters are much milder than they used to be. In winter we should be cold. It's right that we wrap up more before flicking a switch and burning gas.

Also side note. In the uk 1000s of people die because of the cold every year, not just this year (I'm not saying it's right)

When I was a kid there was no central heating or fitted carpets like today. Usually lino. We had a coal fire in the living room and a partition heater in the kitchen and that was it. We would go to bed in our clothes and just have a face wash in the mornings. We had frost on the inside of the windows and we had a bath once a week. We survived

Its all well and good saying we never used to have central heating but also the life expectancy for someone with my daughters conditions were much shorter.. partly as we are meant to have better standard of living now.

Being in a cold house causes her to get chest infection after chest infection... so I have to make sure at least her room is warm. Yes I get financial help to do this but it's made so hard to get.

Its meant to be automatic but as she lives under my roof I have to call them and tell them my details... all well and good but I've tried 238 times to call them at the time I write this...yes I have till the 28th Feb to sort it but I work as well as care for her. It is stupidly difficult on a lot of things just now

We both grew up with the whole ice on the inside of the windows thing I wouldn't go back to that and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I see absolutely no virtue in suffering the cold just because it's how it used to be.

Absoulutley not! I have asthma that is prone to chest infections! Have one now got antibiotics hopefully sort it! And ideally would have the heating on but sadly cannot afford to x

All fine and dandy, then the mold kcks in as no one want to have their windows open.

Good ventilation vs draughproofing and heat retention: choose one.

The days of double glazing in new builds should be over by nowas triple glazing is much better.

I did that to one of my radiators, it was quite labour intensive as the heating in our house was quite inconsistent, I turned the valves shut both sides of the radiator, then removed the radiator took it outside and flushed it, there was a large amount of black sediment come out, I painted behind the radiator then used reflective foil, the one I used was like foil coated bubble wrap, fitted that then refitted the radiator and refilled the system, was a pain in the arse to bleed the air out but now I’ve had to turn the temperature down on the boiler as the system is running so much more efficiently, I’m waffling on here but if your system hasn’t been flushed just doing that can make a massive difference, FYI a full system flush from a corgi registered plumber is over 300quid, I’m saving about thirty quid a month by what I’ve done …. Food for thought

Yes they do work well. All the heat from the radiator ends up heating the air in the room immediately. They are particularly effective where on outside walls.

Downside. If you use the cheap foil it looses it's effectiveness quite quickly as it crinkles easily on application and oxidizes.

One can argue that it may only be needed to be effective for 3+ months so the cheap is worth using and simply replace each year. So for those who can't justify the extra expense for the better quality, it'll save you more than you may realise.

I'm sure many suggestions have already been said but here's a few that may help.

Closing blinds and curtains particularly in front of large windows/ patio doors if you don't need to have them open can save a lot heat loss through glazing.

Check seals on exterior doors and for £3 reseal if there is a draft.

Boil up a flask full of water in the kettle to use during the day rather than repeatedly boiling up water for a cuppa. If you don't have a flask, only boil what you need to use.

Replace bulbs to led bulbs if not already and switch off when you leave a room.

Cheers, seems pretty much the consensus, got a new boiler and all new radiators last year. As any reflectors will stay put for the life of the rads it seems a sensible thing so I'll look into it
