I'm furious.

Been sitting in my van freezing my nards off since 10:30 am.

Mechanic came out reasonably quickly but due to weight of my van needs a recovery truck.

It's now almost 3:30 and they have just told me that it could be another 2:30 hrs yet!!

An hour from home in a street, van full of tools so can't just leave it.

I once broke down in a hire van at 7.30. Called and told be with me by 9. 9 passed so called back and they said, no 9 tonight. That was Mercedes, so I called the RAC and had a van to me in the hour.

Same company as already mentioned left me sat on side of 70mph duel carriage way no street lights no amenities close by for 7.5 hours not even a patrol turned up

I arranged my own recovery due to them not sending for at leat 3 hours

The bit you need to know

My membership started 1m4 days before that breakdown

So I cancelled and demanded my money back

I received less than half my £120.99 annual fee

I am persueing the remainder via trading standards

R A C are S H I T

There excuse was they were very busy in my area

I said you could of sent a patrol from Scotland would still of reached me in the 7.5h

The previous breakdown I had cpl years ago

6 hours I waited for a patrol van then I supplied the parts to get me back up and running or would of been another 6 hours for recovery

He was there for less than 10 minutes and 7 of those were filling in paperwork

It's annoying especially when they then say 'Oh that's classed as an RTA so we don't deal with that' hours after you made the first call

I also had a bad experience R-C I lost drive(broken half shaft) after some hours I managed to do a temporary repair & get myself home, even when I rang them from home to cancel the call out there was no apology. I did not renew my membership.

Same company left my parents sat on the side of the M5 in Bristol for 6 hours with a flat tyre that needed to be changed, but he couldn't do it himself due to the live lane and as my mum is disabled she wasn't able to leave the car without anywhere else to sit down and wait.

The Police ended up doing it for them in the end and using another car to move the traffic away from them to change the tyre.

I was told by the rac that my van was half a foot too long for their trucks when i broke down amd they quoted me over 1200 quid to get home! They are thoroughly useless...

RAC, broke down at 6.30pm, mechanic arrived 1.30am.

Nothing he could do, recovery truck needed. (Which is exactly what I told them was needed)

Vehicle actually recovered some time after 8am.

Try getting any of the big 3 out after 6pm, their day ends and any call that come in after 6pm goes to a sub contractor.

I called them at 4:30pm

At 11pm I booked my own recovery truck @£180 who turned up 30mins later

R-c said they couldn’t get a recovery truck to me until 3am

Which was dubious as they had already told me so many lies about there arrival times

I think the problem is lack of staff which can only be linked to working conditions and pay structure yet the fees go up but the service gets crappier

Go figure!

Ps I forwarded the £180 to the r-c who repayed it 3 weeks after I sent them the invoice

They really are a shower of shite

I’ve been led to believe that green flag use local companies to attend their members ? Anyone know if this is true ?

I only ever get breakdown cover for overseas driving. I have taken the view that given I have only ever needed to be recovered twice in my entire life (one of which was from overseas) and given the amount I would spend annually on UK cover that I would never use, it is better to save that in an emergency fund and just use that money to call a local recovery when needed.

We use Start rescue. Granted I have only had to use it once but it was a godsend at the time as I was on the M6 after being wrapped round the front grill of a truck and my insurance said they were sending someone out.

After being at the side of the Motorway for nearly an hour I rang SR for help, within 20 minutes they had sent a truck and got me home, they didn't even quibble that it was a RTA

They are a good price too

I've only had to call rac once , 3 hour wait on a dreezying Nov night , thankfully was able to move the car to outside a nearby McDonald's so at least I could wait somewhere warm .

Long time ago, but I was an AA member. Broke down in darkest Somerset, snapped a throttle cable which is a easy fix. I told them exactly what was required. @4 hrs later, man turns up, no throttle cable and no idea what else to do. Turns out he’s actually a plumber between employments. I root around I his bits box and find a screw on nipple. Fixed it myself whilst he looked on. Cancelled my membership after that.

Don’t even get me started on fu€bing British Gas!…

I have now received my full refund from rac

No apology from them

Was talking to a elderly fella the other day he is 76 years old he broke down on a A road in the dark and snow no heating no amenities close by

He was told by rac he was not a priority and they were extremely busy due to weather conditions and would be at least 6 hours

He called a local recovery and got home 30 minutes later at cost of £50

The company is a joke

But very clever they don’t give you a contract to read and sign anymore when asked for it the skirt about giving you any liable information

I think the only reason I got my refund was trading standards took on my case

My advice is avoid the rac they are expensive and don’t give a service you would expect

I worked in the break down business for 7 years loved it best job ever I done jobs for all the big company’s but green flag were best

2 years ago I went to work for the Rac and I stayed only 3 months was a embarrassment to turn to people been waiting hours AA is just as bad now

When going out even if you think its a short journey plan ahead.

Take medicine and some food and blanket and full charged phone.

Make sure you have enough fuel to keep engine running if you breakdown or get stuck in traffic.

Check tyre pressure and make sure you have a good spare.
