That sounds odd.

What car is it? How old?

And if the engine is running, turn it off

"And if the engine is running, turn it off "
the car pulled up at my house and I could smell petrol strong the car was turned off I looked under the bonnet all dry but the smell was strong I looked under the car and the flexi pipe on the exhaust was wet and fuel leaking from it I don’t know how it didn’t catch fire and the car is an Audi A4 2.0 turbo

Something to do with the petrol not being fully burned in the combustion chamber leading to

The liquid fuel pulling through to the exhaust probably.

Dodgy valve seals or gaskets, spark plugs.

Probably best to take it to someone that knows what to look for. Hopefully a quick fix

we was hoping to avoid taking it to the garage but sounds way more than I could do with my limited socket set and knowledge

Just that it could be one of many reasons. Or more than one of them.

You do not want pure petrol dripping on a running car OP ! Get to a garage asap.

Sounds more like a split injector pipe or knackered injector spraying fuel on to the flexi pipe rather than leaking out of the flexi pipe.

Get it checked out. Exhausts don't have flexi pipes. Fuel goes from the tank to the injection system then it's in the block until burned or if the mixture is far too rich it could be blown out through the exhaust. That would be picked up by the ems giving an orange light on the dash.

Does the car sound like it may be miss-firing when you have the bonnet up as it could be spark plugs leads even piston rings or valve seals not receiving the combustion that is needed to burn the fuel so leaking via the exhaust could also be a diaphragm in the carburettor a quick crypto tune would show if you are receiving an ignition too each plug and pressure to deliver the right combustion. It will identify

very lumpy but we turned it straight of when I saw fuel coming from the exhaust

If it’s an Audi it’s probably connected to that system that senses when the car in front of it is exactly 6 inches away.

I agree. Don’t run the engine because petrol onto a hot exhaust is a fire risk

Near Abercynon

As someone else has said, it sounds more likely that it is a fuel leak resulting in petrol *on* the exhaust rather than in it

Leaking injector or the fuel bypass line that diverts unspent fuel back to the fuel tank .. say if you boot it then take your foot off .. get it looked at ASAP unless you want an engine fire

Might be as I've said a number of things or a simple emissions test might be running to rich or even due to a blockage or simply just need a set of spark plugs

If you're a member with the rac I'd suggest give them a call could just be a leaking pipe

AA been out plugged a computer on and it’s showing 2 injectors not working he said they are stuck open possibly a faulty injector or ecu problem thanks for the info

Welcome pal

Well least you know, hopefully a simple less costly fix. Things with electronics, sensors connected too fuel just adds to problems hopefully just a bad connection

Good luck

Portstewart

Stuck injectors from what you said op I'd say probably 2 and even more of a guess as the car was driving at first I'd say cylinders 3 and 4

I suggest take off one of the leads on the battery then replace as this can help to reset the ECU.... Which you're able to do could be a quick fix or might need reprogramming as it effects the performance and everything else surrounding the engine
