Reports that the Chief of Police in London catches only 1% of bike thieves which is approximately only one in a hundred perpetrators of this nasty crime. Tom is no statistician but it would be interesting to publish the crimes that are well detected.

Personally I think there's a second hand bike shop somewhere run buy a Fagin style owner with a team of orphans running around nicking bikes.

That would be a real 'Twist' in the tale......

I'm sure this could be the plot of a new "Gone in 60 seconds" film.

A team of crack, but essentially on the side of good to, bike thiefs steal a list of high end bikes to be shipped out of the country by the real baddies. The good guys have to implicate the bad guys without getting arrested by the police.

There are a little under 2000 deaths and @35000 serious injuries annually on UK roads, mostly caused by bad driving habits. Not many casualties from bike thefts....

Most bikes are untraceable. There are gangs in London openly using angle grinders to get locks off bikes.

And at the other end of the scale there are organised crime gangs stealing to order and high end bikes are being shipped abroad.

Abd there's a worrying amount of bikejackings taking place using knives and machetes

Most bikes that are recovered are spotted on gumtree or Facebook and its the owners tenacity nothing to so with the police.

But there are many, many cases of people spotting a sto1en bike on gumtree and the police refusing to get involved so the owner either buys it back or turns up mob handed to recover it

My educated guess is that the number actually relates to catching 1% of bike thefts, but that unless each bike theft is undertaken by an individual who then retires, it's more likely that bike theives are serial offenders who steal many, many bike. Happy to be wrong, naturally, only knowing Tom this number probably relates to the number of police that cycle work.

But if you ring the police and tell them that you had your bike nicked (which you've already reported to them for insurance purposes) and tell them it is for sake on gumtree and if they act they will recover a sto1en item and nick someone for at the least handling sto1en goods and the police shrug their shoulders, what would you do? Let the thief sell it on?

In fairness when this dilemma is posted in London cycling groups (and it is frequently) no one ever talks about rough justice, just take back up if you plan to stea1 it back in case things get ugly though I'm sure some thieves have taken a beating over this.

But the Met police treat bicycle theft as the lowest level crime
