Does anyone else suffer with this?

I've had acne ever since I hit puberty. It was pretty severe up until I was around 22, but I managed to clear up the worst of it with antibiotics. But it's still always there, and my skin is far from perfect. Sometimes it flares up for absolutely no reason, like now, and it's just completely shattering my confidence as I look dreadful and so dull.

I'm interested in roacctune but I'm not sure if my doctor will prescribe it because my acne isn't constant and the worst of it is usually only 2 or 3 weeks out of every 6 and the rest of the time it isn't that bad. Has anyone got experience of this?

What about laser surgery? Has anyone had anything like this or any treatments they would recommend?

I've tried so many prescribed products over the years. I'm completely full of knowledge on skincare products and acids etc but they make little difference. I've changed my diet, gone without makeup for long periods of time but it doesn't make a difference.

It's the worst on my face but likes to show up on other parts of my body too. My bum is awful sometimes. Pretty grim right? But I'm keeping it real!

Any advice or recommendations would be amazing! I just want clear skin. I'll be 30 next year and the thought of living through my 30s with skin like this is fucking frustrating. I feel amazing when my skin is clear and it makes such a difference.

I've tried personalised skincare service like Dermatica etc which is fantastic but as soon as I stop using it my skin just pings right back and it's difficult to get hold of if you're not in the UK.

Thanks for reading.

My ex had a course of acutane and it did help a lot. It's not tej nicest of drugs and Yiu need to be careful (side effects can be suicidal thoughts irrc, and many people have MH stuff as it can be debilitating)

I can find out what skin care she uses now. Shes also allwrgic to a shit load of stuff so it tends to be pricey!

Do you need to take any medications that could flare the acne? Like I know somebody that barely had a spot in their life, went on some anti depressants and then ended up with acne.

I used to quite badly and still get the occasional outbreak I have noticed since I have been drinking a cup cup of green tea a day don't have as many breakouts.

Also be very careful with what product you use even things like washing powder can cause issues.

I had it terrible until my early 20s but things that helped me were:

Sunshine and fresh air

Not using soap on my face

Dried with disposable cotton wool or tissue

Overnight dabs of toothpaste on yellowheads

Keeping hair off the face

Good luck x

I was prescribed Roaccutane when I was in my late teens, it was horrible because it made my skin much, much worse and there were a lot of side effects. However, it did work and I haven't had issues since.

I'd add: it is worth going to your doctor's. But be prepared to fight your corner. It's too easy for them to suggest diet and stuff. Have it all written down what you've done, when you get it, etc. And talk to them if its affecting your MH.

I started getting spots when I was about 12. It continued pretty steadily until only a few years ago, and my absolute breakthroughs were - realising that reducing my sugar intake made a huge difference, along with finding a couple of sites, ‘simple skincare science’ and ‘sezia’. I only use skincare and cosmetics that don’t contain certain ingredients and my skin is almost completely clear now. No more hiding away, no more praying I didn’t get a huge obvious spot for an important event. Clinique and Fenty do a lot of great products.

I had terrible cystic acne all the way through to my mid-twenties.

I jumped through hoops for years eith the gp to get it sorted.

Started with different combine contraceptive that ended up wirh me in a&e thinking I was having a stroke.

I then went through every known antibiotic tablet, gel, cream known to man for years to which none of them worked.

Only when I eventually got referred to the dermotologist at the hospital and got a course of accutane did I finally get rid of it. The side effects weren't too bad for me, just really dry skin and lips so invested in some seriously good gel for the lips and body cream for the skin. It did start to effect my liver slightly but I was due to finish the course and all went back to normal afterwards.

Now I only get the odd tiny pimples which compared to cystic acne is nought.

I find keeping fragranced products and products containing parabens away from my face helps too as I know when something I use has either of those in them as it upsets my face.

Going on accutane was the best thing I ever did and was worth the side effects.

I've tried everything over the years, likely spent thousands! But in the end what worked (helped) was quitting dairy and buying a £5 soap! Try Revitale Salicylic Acid Scrub Soap.

Thank you for all taking the time to respond!

I'm going to book another appointment with my doctor and try and push accutane. I honestly feel like at this point it's the best option, even with all the side effects that might come along with it. I've always been fobbed off when I've asked but it's genuinely starting to wear me down dealing with it constantly. It's so painful too.

I've tried cutting food groups, recognising what things could be triggering (medication/skincare etc) but it really doesn't make much of a difference.

Hopefully I'll be able to get my doctor to refer me to a dermatologist. I'm not hopeful though.

Thank you.

I really get what youre saying about it hitting your confidence, I was prescribed roachtaine as an adult well into my twenties, which was a while ago.

I'd tried everything from various skin care products to prescribed anti biotics. Nothing really worked.

My GP sent me to see a specialist / dermatologist who then asked the GP to prescribe roachtaine, there can be side effects which you need to way up but I never suffered from these side effects.

It worked for me, from memory after about 3 years the condition had improved enough and I stopped having to take it, luckily the acne never returned.

Same here. Tried every cream and potion known to man to help since my teenage years. I was on dianette pill for a while which helped. Im on Yasmin now which is helping thankfully.

Depression can be a huge side effect from roaccutane so I steered clear.

One great thing I use if I feel spots coming is Alpha H liquid gold - I swear by it.
