At a party of my brothers, one of his friends was making very nice home made nibbles, can't remember the exact details, he did things like...

Filo pastry cut into smallish squares, topped with various goodies. Peppers with a dash of balsamic vinegar, blue cheese and olives, whatever you fancy.

Always like brown bread triangles with smoked salmon too

Better make Hummus with as much water as possible instead of olive oil, otherwise, it is loaded with calories!

Stuffed wine leaves, they are nice, and perfect finger food. Available in tins in supermarkets.

Some of the frozen starters that require deep frying are actually quite good, like prawns in filo pastry, butterfly prawns, and any oriental dim sums.

The likes of Lidl's and Aldi's have a good selection this time of the year, just need to choose carefully, that's all.

Hence the suggestion of meat or fruit skewers.

I sort of DO want to avoid it altogether but don't mind home made THIN pastry that is to hold a good filling.

Shop stuff is ALL pastry with some flecks of protein drowned in a flour based panada

Cube beetroot, and cook with balsamic vinegar and a teaspoon of brown sugar. Bruschetta with goats cheese and balsamic onion toasted under the grill is yummy and bite size frittata (sp) with chorizo, baked in a 12 cup mini sandwich tin.

On Ritz crackers or poppy and sesame seeds thins, add one of the following:

A King prawn topped with Marie Rose sauce then topped with a few lumpfish roes

Smoked salmon topped with a dill sauce made with half and half of creme fraiche and mayo, then topped with a few lumpfhis roes.

I like to use both orange and black roes to make them look pretty on a plate, however, orange ones are harder to come by.
