Joking, actually because we loved eachother. But these things don't always work out for the best.

Honest answer is to conform.

Everyone expected it but we got married on our terms 25yrs ago in one of our favourite and also remote places.

It didn't change our relationship one bit but then we never expected it to. It was just nice to have a party!

That man wasn't wise, he was simply incapable of imagining a relationship that wasn't held together by milk.

Tell your friend that marriage isn't for everyone, it's absolutely possible to have a commited and lasting relationship without it.

Just on the other side of the fence, me and my partner chose not to get married. It doesn't make a difference to our relationship or how much we love each other, it's just not important for us to have a piece of paper set in stone. People's personal choice I guess.

Why did I get married?

First time around, because I wanted to throw a fucking awesome party.

Second time around, because I’m madly in love with my wife and I wanted to make the ultimate show of commitment to her. (And also throw an even more fucking awesome party.)

Actually think it’s quite an interesting question… and some interesting answers and discussion.

I am sympathetic to those who say they got married cos they love(d) each other, I get that people want to show a ‘public’ commitment, but there are loads of folk out there who happily live together ‘unmarried’, and I’d be sad to think we, as a society, would still judge them differently just because of a historical precedent…

If the rules had changed we would have had a civil partnership, but that wasn’t available to het couples at the time. Our thinking was marriage is patriarchal but we wanted a family and pragmatically there is more security for one another if one of us dies etc. really romantic eh?

I think it remains the case that if you wanted some of the legal arrangements that come “automatically” with civil partnerships/marriage it is pretty tiresome to replicate them outside of those contexts.

Ryde

Because we knew we were going to eventually. We are sickeningly in love, each other's missing piece and all that shit, and it was just making it official. And to stop relatives asking when it was going to be.

We had a really cheap wedding, and played the Queen's version of The Wedding March (from Flash Gordon) as the entrance music, and The Birdie Song on the way out. It wasn't about the spectacle or feeding egos - just that it was now all on the record. It hasn't changed the relationship at all, and the "married" status makes certain legal matters easier.

Being on the site it just for a little extra lenght... um... I mean fun...

I find nowadays people are more judgemental of those who chose to marry than those who didn't.

There also seems to be an underlying feeling that certain things are more acceptable if you're not married to each other than if you are.
