Remembrance Day. The Prime Minister at the Cenotaph. Cabinet ministers all wearing poppies. And then I find this article, showing exactly how the government really feels about those working in the armed services.

Read it and weep. It's time to get rid of the thieving corrupt tory scum that have been destroying everything decent about this country.

* Note: Not all tories are scum, some are honest decent folk who happen to have differing political opinions than mine. But every tory minister since Johnson became PM, and many of those from earlier, are most definitely scum that should be washed down the nearest sewer.

They do. But some are complete grots.

But the article refers to housing. As in accommodation for married personal/families.

My ex was in the army and also married. She had photos of some of the houses she lived it.

Absolutely rotten. Mould on the walls and ceiling. Plaster falling off the walls. Inadequate heating. (I should add, this wasn't the case in all housing).

Trying to get the Army to do repairs was a nightmare...and Civilian contractors seemed to cause more damage

I worked in the Ministry of Defence, immediately after university, based in a Royal Army cantonment in Dorset.

The gulf between living accommodation for the army personnel and their families and the commissioned officers was all too apparent. And yet no one complained. They deserved better.

Didn't the MOD sell of much of its housing to Terra Firma, a private equity fund, who in all probability may have sold it on through many different owners...

If so, aren't you aiming at the wrong target OP?

Who is ultimately responsible for the welfare of soldiers and providing for them?

I don't think the government can pass the buck no matter how much they strip assets or even if they turn the whole of London into a poppy

It's not a matter of who actually owns the properties. This is about army families living in these places who have asked the MOD to do something, and when they have escalated the issue to formal complaints, have received intimidating letters from government lawyers. Rather than taking steps to improve the properties (or telling the current owners of the properties to do so), the government instead threatens financial reprisals against the families of serving personnel.

This is never a callous decision made by some low ranking civil servant in the MOD, this could only happen as a matter of policy coming from the highest levels. The buck stops with the prime ministers (choose any of the last five of them), it is their ultimate responsiblity. For them then to pretend to care in front of the Cenotaph is an insult to all armed service members, past and present.

When a country's leaders treat like shit those who serve and too often die, those leaders do not deserve the respect of anyone. They are not leaders, they are a stain on the reputation of this country.

Standard legal process to try and bully the other side into dropping the action over the fear of being lumbered with costs.

I have the same with my employer at the moment who tried it and ended up with the bill themselves.

But what costs? The MoD is clearly not getting the service it’s paying from from the landlord. They should be threatening them with action for non compliance (unless the contract is so bad that this IS the agreed standard).

Why the hell would brexit have anything to do with this?

This situation predates brexit, hell the crappiness of the accommodation may predate the tory government. However the tories have been in power for umpty years now, and it is them who have chosen to threaten to bankrupt the soldiers families rather than doing anything to fix the shitty housing.

Remembrance day = sanctimonious tory government playing all sad in front of the cenotaph.

Every other day = corrupt tory government shitting on the people that do the fighting.
