I think in all honesty nurses definitely deserve a payrise

But also minimum wage needs to increase given how the cost of living has drastically increased wages have to reflect that

That's the problem with strikes : they only work for groups having the collective power to disrupt and inconvenience. If you are, say, a jobbing carpenter or roof tiler, you have no power to strike, and you fall behind in the wages feeding trough.

A nurses strike would only work if all the private health nurses were on strike as well.

Politicians won't care unless they are inconvenienced as well.

We need pay rises across all sectors and job roles. Everyone who is in paid employment deserves a living wage and good standard of living, it's sad we live in a country where that doesn't happen already.

I can well understand Nurses and others seeking pay rises to keep pace with inflation. It is probably fully justified too. The trouble is, in a recession, higher wage rises just help fuel the inflation.

Hospital managers have to balance the cost of heating, power, maintenance, equipment purchase, training, cleaning, ancilliary tasks, etc etc against their salary budgets. It is very difficult.

So give the hospitals more money you say. Where does that come from? Yes a one off windfall profit Tax. Do that too often and the target company will just leave Britain.

We are in a difficult position now. After 40 years of being part of the EU with a huge tariff free market available to us and masses of cheap labour we now find we have tarrifs to pay and we are in effect global "billy no mates".

Prior to Brexit the sensible economists forecast it would take 20 years to get back to where we were before Brexit. I perceive the nurses are in for a long struggle on this point.

Agree 100%.

Public service workers on the whole are paid more then those in the private sector, and can hold the country to ransom if they don’t get what they want. Sickness pay is completely different and so are pensions.

I’ve recently had open heart surgery and can vouch first hand for the amazing work NHS staff do. I can also vouch for the amazing work the girl in our local cafe does but nobody would even notice if she went on strike.

This. We're the 4th richest country in the world, but too much wealth is concentrated in the hands of too few.

No one is saying the billionaires and millionaires should be left with a few thousand pounds, just that they should be a bit less super rich.

of Batistas went on strike the middle class will fall apart.

I have no idea how much barista pay has changed over the last ten years. Nor any other job tbh. But we do need to keep an eye on the nurses (and others like barristers) isn't about a year of below inflation payrises. It's been a decade.

Why? I’m not one of the people you’re talking about, far from it. But if someone has made a fortune in business or ever for just kicking a ball around, why should they just hand over nearly all their money?
