Do you have an internal monologue?

Here's a question that pops up on my FB feed every now and then and always blows up. Curious to see what you bunch of deviants think about it.

Do you have an internal monologue? As in an internal narration you hear all the time.

Or do you not have that?

I’m endlessly talking to myself, I don’t even think about it, it sometimes changes to me singing in my head but otherwise it’s always there, do other people not then?

I only ever criticise myself on a daily basis and it tends to be the only internal dialogue I hear. I actually can't recall when I last spoke nicely to or about myself to myself, I only ever hear what a fat ugly cunt I am, how useless I am etc when in reality I know I'm not those things all the time.

i recently found out that some people when reading, dont actually hear the words in their head. and i was astounded.

I wonder what other things people feel is normal for the human experience, that not every other human is actually aware of.

Like the people who see colours with music/sound or people who can taste words. I dont experience either of those.

I think it's interesting that everyone experiences thought differently but generally have no idea other people are having a different experience.

For me personally I think without an internal voice, I just understand what I'm thinking about. If I want to share a thought then I use an internal monologue to translate the thoughts into language.

I keep telling Ellen it isn't normal

Some consider the move from reading aloud (what everyone did in the early days) to silent reading to have been an evolutionary step.

All that reading used to be done in a chapter house. That's where we get chapters from.

You shouldn’t and should embrace them. Try to understand where they are coming from, which feelings are entangled with those monologues. How accurate they are and so on. Until you manage to control them or at control the perspective you have on them.

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

"Yes I do. It's not nasty or nice just plays the role of narrator of my life.

Most of us do, but i know someone who hasn't. "

Is that as in a literal Narrator? Like

"He grabbed the kettle, reached over to the tap and poured in"

Does it describe everything you do?

Self talk is constant apart from during sleep, butcthen it pops up via dreams.

What it's about varies.

Mine is influenced by my non neuro typical brain conditions, my ptsd effects, my irritation levels and the nag in my mind to do stuff to make my life slightly more liveable.

For the happier thoughts it's often cor, look at the bum on her yep. Guilty.

"Yes I do. I thought it was normal until after speaking to other people I realised not everyone has it.

Yeah everyone should have an inner judge it keeps us grounded as decent humans if you don’t have one your just running of crazy

Disagree. I'd happily live without mine

You shouldn’t and should embrace them. Try to understand where they are coming from, which feelings are entangled with those monologues. How accurate they are and so on. Until you manage to control them or at control the perspective you have on them.

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. "

Suprisingly insightful. Ill take that onboard, thanksm

I agree... after a dodgy couple of weeks time for a bit of reflection.. and I don't mean look in a mirror

When I am working something out at work it is an almost full on conservation, I do get some strange looks sometimes especially if I swear at myself and use my name.

Normally it just a quiet monologue but it can get to be a 2 sided affair. Yes, it can be worrying.

No, it's genderless too unless like me it's a woman. Literally describing my life to myself would be deadly boring.

"I only ever criticise myself on a daily basis and it tends to be the only internal dialogue I hear. I actually can't recall when I last spoke nicely to or about myself to myself, I only ever hear what a fat ugly cunt I am, how useless I am etc when in reality I know I'm not those things all the time. "

This, especially recently! I'm tearing myself to bits and tbh as neggy as my inner monologue is, he's not wrong

I have an internal monologue, I think in words and phrases too. Not pictures.

Yes I do and she doesn’t half go on a bit it’s constant head chatter, questions and thoughts. Obviously I’m not consciously noticing them all the time but they are there.

My brain never shuts up. If it's not an internal monologue then there's a song or a tune stuck in there. Can be quite annoying.

My internal monologue never stops! It’s 24/7, not sure if that’s normal or not

No. Some people think in an internal voice and some people like myself think in weird abstract webs without language.

I feel you. And then when I get in a situation where I want to remember the song lyrics, can I? No I can’t. Just one verse or chorus. Maddening

Yeah but I kinda have 2 to contend with. The guy doing day to day stuff in mundane world working & running home, plus the girl constantly looking for the next look or opportunity to dress. Tug of war that never stops

I usually just talk to my dogs. They look at me bemused, tilt their head to one side prick up an ear and listen....

And then tell me what they think, their answer is usually....biscuits

I do, always thought it came from being a voracious reader. Developed my own little narrator's voice.

The trouble starts if my filter goes on the fritz and I listen to it too much coz she's a hardcore takenoshit kinda person.... truths escape me

"Yes I do. And when I'm in France my monologue is often in French - which is a real pain because I find myself using a lot of mental energy trying to find the right words. (My French is not at all brilliant). Anyone else find this when abroad?"

I can't speak French, but I definitely get this when I'm in Spain, monologue is twice as long because it's Spanish first, then translates it to English

When I'm immersed in the Spanish language, my brain wholly flips to Spanish and I forget to speak English with my husband sometimes. I have to stop and think. Weird

One of my lecturers in uni was asked when would you consider yourself fluent, since languages never stop evolving etc. He said, when you dream in that language it's a good indicator
