Is this tradition still relevant today? Does the population of the UK respond to a preprepared script which basically says the same thing apart from references to Annualis Horribilus? Its been a pretty bleak one (year) for all in the UK in terms of standards of living.

If someone doesn't like the Queen's Xmas Message then don't watch it, but if others do like to watch it then that's up to them isn't it?

It's no more or less relevant than any other Christmas message, I think. Just one more thing that sets us apart from the rest of the World really. Can't see the Yanks even, sitting down to watch Mr Obama tell them what wonderful things America has done around the World in the past year...?

As for the pre-prepared script, I would agree though. The best Christmas Message Liz has given that I can recall, is one David Attenborough directed about 20 years ago which she gave from the stables at Buck House, and largely featured her talking with a group of children about the horses and the part they play in ceremonials. Much more natural than the rather starchy 'sits a desk and remembers to smile at camera' jobbie we normally get.

But then, she has parachuted out of a helicopter this year, so you never know what we could be in for.....

Its traditional it keeps up the hype world wide think if the queen akin to Colonel Sanders by more as brand marketing for the umbrella company Brand UK. The queens speech is essentially just a big advertisement.

Is any tradition still worth initial reason behind its existence,,,,?

I'd rather live in a diverse and colourful society that celebrates traditions rather than one which phase's them out of our culture because some people don't get their appeal….

Yet a great year in terms of the country. Held a very successful Olympics and Paralympics, the jubilee promoted great Britain around the world, now we have a royal baby to look forward to.

As others have said, if you don't like it don't watch it but as long as we have a monarchy (and I hope we always will) then there will be a speech to watch on Christmas day

It is not neccesary to believe in hereditary monarchy to believe in your country.

It's a British tradition and xmas wouldn't be the same without it.

I wonder what Mrs Brown's annual speech would be like

There is absolutely no correlation between loving your country and supporting a Monarchy. Are we so arrogant as to assume the French..Americans..Russians, et al, love their country any less because they have no Monarchies ?
