Shipley, Bradford

Anyone else watching this? Rare I have the patience to binge watch something, but I'm really enjoying this.

Think I'm developing a man crush on Jack O'Connell. He's rapidly becoming one of my fave actors

Connor Swindells is also superb in it.

You'd never know. It is in no way Sandy Blinders.

Stephen Knight, he's clearly not a one hit wonder lol.

Think I prefer this to Peaky Blinders. That suffered from too many slow mo scenes of them all walking along and looking moody

Its getting quite a lot of good feedback.

But i binned it after about 40mins. Too much made up stuff added to it.

Having read quite a few books on Mayne, Lewes and Stirling.

I've taken it for what it is: A Boys Own retelling, with added punk music and profanity.

Apparently Stephen Knight had to tone it down, as viewers wouldn't believe it otherwise!!

All Quiet on the Western Front is also bloody amazing. Very poignant for this month too.

Hits home how hard WW1 was

Dundalk

I've watched and enjoyed it but Paddy Maynes accent really grated on me as does every effort at a Northern Ireland accent so his scenes were hard to watch for that reason.

It's drama, not history, but it's entertaining enough

I think there's an episode on now - gave up after 5 mins - far to pedestrian in pace for someone like me with a short attention span

This.

Lasted through the first episode then I thought "too much of this is just dramatisation for the sake of it."

Went to watch All Quiet On The Western Front. Now THAT is a must-watch of the year, on par with 1917.

I know people will enjoy it, because its been sexed up and given the Peaky Blinders treatment. And thats not an issue.

But why fabricate stuff?? Its an incredible story without it.

I knew id struggle with it in the first 5mins, when Paddy Mayne beat up the three MP's and walked out of prison.

Mayne never spent any time in custody. Even after he beat up a Major while d*unk, who had supposedly killed his dog while Mayne was on a mission with No.11 Commando.

I heard some bits were actually events toned down to make them more believable. The grenade on the snooker table i remember reading about.

I wanted to hear what people from Northern Ireland thought of O'Connells accent.

Yes, All Quiet On The Western Front is brilliant.

They've changed the story quite a lot.

But some very poignant and moving scenes

Social Zone

Not what I was expecting, thought it would be more serious and struggled with the way the story was told, with the odd sound track, random screen shots of names and well boys style. As supposed to be taken from Ben McIntyre’s book, which I enjoy, I was disappointed in the style they chose to shoot this in.

I'm loving it, just finished episode four. I know a lot of it is bollocks but it's very well made and I really like the characters. I understand there are options for further series, let's hope so.

Farnborough

Only seen episode 1 so far, but taking it (as you do with any drama) at face value. It is (unsurprisingly) very Peaky ‘Blindersesque’, but of course it would be. If you look at that series versus the real history of the Peaky Blinders, there is a loose, but dramatised association with reality there also.

It is alluded to in the series (so I understand), but it was widely thought that Blair Mayne was gay, and that was part of his issue. He couldn’t accept it in his own mind, as sadly so many couldn’t then.

Still to see All Quiet yet. Again I understand it deviates significantly from the story of the 1933 and 79 version, but understand it to be be good depiction of the horrors of WW1. How can you have a remake that doesn’t include Cpl Himmelstosch!! - a key character of the storyline!!

R x

Not where we seem to be...

Watched the entire series, really enjoyed it.

Absolutely true to the actual history? Of course not.

Nods to it? For sure.

Worth a watch IMHO.

Great series, spoilt by 'punk' era music.
