La la land

It's relatively common to call people pet names where I'm from. Think it's common where communities have kept their own dialects and traditions. I find it rather endearing and fascinating to be honest. It'll be a sad day when a part of our cultural history is lost. Which looks increasingly likely in our homogenised society.

You can tell if it's harmless & generational or patronising misogyny in action.

The former is of no consequence to me and not insulting. Working with the public all my days I'm used to this from both men and women. Often it's their way of building rapport or showing appreciation for good service and assistance.

The latter will get zero response from me, no words, a patient blank stare. Disrespect is never rewarded by my attention. If they find their manners I'll happily engage.

Do you wear a name badge in your public role? And the public don't have to dance to your tune. It's clearly not meant as offensive. Understand that people are different, and respect the people who pay your wages. Public servant, perhaps ask your supervisor to put you in a role where you don't have to face the public. I'd put you in a role that doesn't cause you so much anxiety and distress, unbelievable it really is. Explain to your supervisor that you are a swinger and prefer to be called as much?

I quite like terms of endearment in my old age, before I'd be outraged that someone had the audacity to use such an awful thing but now? It’s really not difficult to understand.

Call someone by their name unless agreed otherwise.

It’s doesn’t have to be that you’re offended or outraged, and it doesn’t have to be used in any particular manner for you not to like it, or to like it if that’s your preference.

I’m adult enough to gage if what I say in a PM will be well received or not. I can’t remember ever being pulled up in a PM about it. Like I said, I would never use the word ‘babe’. "

Then I don’t understand?

If you aren’t using pet names, what’s the issue?

I also don’t understand why not liking pet names screams desperation.

"I‘m not treading on eggshells wondering if something I say will be well received by a potential ’play mate’. If they don’t like it then they’re not on my wavelength, no biggy really.

The whole ‘babe’ thing screams of shear desperation, in my honest and humble opinion.

Do you not ask?

I read it the opposite, that the person who uses pet names with a stranger is a bit desperate

The OP asked about the word ‘baby’ which she said she finds cringy. I agree and in my opinion screams of desperation. It’s not difficult to understand

on whose part and why desperation some people naturally say babe as part of their everyday communication with others, women say it to guys also, the main problem here is that women receive so many messages that it's lost its meaning, women are sick of it and many compliments, I hasten to add not all women

Hate pet names and nicknames. Both suggest that the person using them thinks of you as an object rather than a person.

Hun is my least favourite. I would rather be called Attila lol.

Strange concept, use a person’s name or username. These usually don’t offend.

I think the OP is discussing random guy’s messaging her and calling her babe in availed attempt to get into her knickers.

I have been getting this a lot in my recent messages and it really boils my piss for some reason.

Baby is a personal thing to me and being called it by a complete stranger is just a no go

My pet name is Minnie, she's a lovely 8 year old tortoiseshell. That's the only pet name I'll use.
