Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

Was -3 t'other night when my fecking boiler packed in and I had no heating or hot water

As I lay shivering in bed, trying to tempt the cats to come keep me warm, I realised I still had the summer (4.5 tog) duvet on...cue Caz hobbling off to the spare room where the 13.5 tog duvet adorned the bed and seeing as couldn't be arsed to try swapping them right then, I kipped in there for the night - proper snug and toasty

We have no central heating or hot water, haven't had for two and a half yrs, due to no bloody money for oil and now I guess the boiler would probably be broken?

Two duvets on thw beds and lots of hot water bottles, and a coal fire in the lounge.

BRRRR!

I know Port Out Starboard Home but what's the explanation of SHIT Diamonds?

Cannonballs used to be stacked in a pyramid shape with a triangle shaped brass support around the bottom (like the ferrerro rocher tray!)

In cold conditions metal contracts, and expands in heat (as does everything to a degree I believe)

When it got very very cold, the brass support, called a monkey, shrinks to the point where the balls were squeezed up and popped out spilling over the deck.

Hope that explains well enough

When they used to transport grain ect on the ship they had to store it high so that the water didnt get into it and written on the bags was S H I T which stands for Store High In Transit.

The cargo would of gone of and rotten so thats where shit comes from

It's actually where the sea water spray used to collect between the cannon balls and when it was cold enough to freeze the water the ice expands and pushed the balls off the pyramid.

Could have a thread all of its own this one.

Sea water typically will freeze at -2degC which may be a shock to you but the water in the artic has never dropped below -2.6degC

The phrase has never really been verified as being anything to do with ships. Cannon balls in a pyramid would fall over just due to the rolling of a ship. and the difference in expansion between brass and iron is almost identical. Cannon balls were normally stored on wooden planks with holes in them, so freezing water would only make them stick.

Bottom line is there is no satisfactory explanation and it is probable that the expression was initially "freeze the tail of a brass monkey" but like many expressions they get adapted and then just get taken as true after a number of years
