Poultry farmers have been ordered to keep all birds indoors prompting a scare that they will not be able to label them 'free range' this Christmas. So many turkeys and geese have been culled that there are stories that the birds will be so expensive this year and that poor people may not be able to afford a Christmas turkey this year ..

What's going on here guys?

Gov have given permission that all healthy turkey's may be culled now and frozen for the Xmas food chain

I feel sorry for all the swans that are dying atm, the numbers are awful

It's usually caused by infected wild birds looking for food/water and ending up in the same locale as the birds on the farms, small holdings etc. It's highly contagious hence the culling of the other birds at the site and protection zones around locations where its found. It's also a notifiable disease if anyone keeping fowl finds it in their birds.

I'm not sure what's made it so bad this year though.

Birds havent been able to build up resistance , possibly Geese and Ducks but commercial flocks not. I understand peoples thoughts on If we didnt cull all of birds the flock will get a resistance....trust me crom someone who witnesses it first hand it kills all commercial chickens and turkeys in a day or so. Geese and Ducks can harbour the disease for a few weeks.

Its not like foot and mouth disease, it cannot be controlled. We will have to wait until a decent vaccine is developed.

Things out there are far worse than has been reported on the news. We usually get around 2 positives a year...so far for the past 12 months we have had new cases every week in commercial premises.

Since 1st Oct this year we have had over 90 confirmed commercial cases.

They were talking about relaxing rules so farmers are able to cull healthy poultry now and freeze it up until selling it thawed for Christmas. I don’t like the sound of that.

People end up with food poisoning every Christmas from poultry. It would be labelled so people would know it had been previously frozen but people don’t always read. They aren’t expecting a fresh Turkey to have been previously frozen.

It was first identified in China in 1996 Tom.

Not everyone has turkey at Christmas anyway, I have steak and Mrs normally has duck (I think).
