To be honest and this may sound selfish though thought of becoming an organ donor is one that freaks me out a little. I dont know why it just does, if some one was ill id gladly donate a kidney etc to help them, but doing it once ive passed on hmmm i dont know and i dont know why,

odd or what

I think its probably something most people havent thought of, but lets say you god forbid are clinging to life and the doctors say there is no hope we are gonna switch you off, what greater legacy can you leave than too think someone else can use your bits and have a longer fulfilled life, gets my vote. x

I would love to donate blood and organs but I am not allowed to

I was told years ago due to a condition I have that it would be impossible to donate blood, and now due to things wrong with me I have to take huge amounts of tablets so will never be able to donate anything

I watch news articles on people who are really deserving of organs and blood and my heart goes out to them cos if I could I would help in anyway I can.

The organs, what ever they are, have to be taking from you very quickly after your death, obviously your body dies and so the organs follow suit..

Not sure I could cope with the trauma of a death and then knowing the body of my loved one was being cut open and bits removed...

But then again, maybe the thought of helping somebody because of my loss, helpin them to live longer or have a better quality of life....

My honest answer 'I just dont know'

Bless you Shona if only more people were like you, at the end of the day your body is left behind and so im told lol, your spirit departs, so why not give your organs away lol

Have to agree with this BUT in all honesty the main reason I'm a donor is that I am terrified of being buried alive (silly fear I know but there you go) and very very selfishly know that if they take my heart that'll definitely not happen !!!!! Strange but true

personally i think we should consider moving to an opt out system rather than the current opt in. Then everyone would have to consider their choice before being faced with an almost impossible one

i know i may be in a huge minority though.

Gets my vote every time miss. The tough part for some is to rationalise body and soul. For me, and I mean no disrespect to others viewpoint, once dead the spirit has gone and all thats left is a skin covered set of bones and bits. Organ donation IMHO is a real no brainer but I full understand others reservations.

I have been on the organ donor register for the last 18 years and am a regular blood donor.

Those that can give blood should consider doing it too because you never know when you might need a blood tranfusion to save your own life.

its good to know im not on my own in this. It's always an emotive topic, but one i've made sure since i was in my late teens that my next of kin is clear on my wishes. I cant imagine them having to make that decision for me in a time of extreme distress, and i dont want to waste anything which could give quality of life to some one else.

I've had a donor card since I was old enough to carry one.

But there are those that have serious religious objections to it, and while on a personal level I agree that it should be opt out, the chances of organs being mistakenly removed from someone who doesn't agree with it is to great. It would only take a piece of paper to go missing for that opt out to not be recorded, and with the way we slavishly follow what a computer screen says, any family objections would be ignored.

Now that's irony lol

Whenever I think of organ donation it always reminds of the sketch in Monty Python's Meaning of Life where John Cleese turn up at Eric Idle's house and says they need his liver but he replies that he's still using it, to which they say, "You have an organ donor card, don't you?" and he says, "Yes", "well, under the terms of conditions we have a right to your liver then." Then they carve him up.

As for me personally, if they can salvage anything from my carcass after I've finished with it they're welcome to it. I think it should be an opt out scheme rather than an opt in one. What better way to ultimately serve ones community but I also think the govt should pay for funerals for those that do donate organs after death.

I dont mind what they do to me after I am dead, after all, I will not know about it.

However, my daughter wants to be a donor, and the thought of them cutting her up after she has died makes my blood run cold, so, unfortunately I would say no. Strange, but you cant help the way you feel.

I'm assuming that if have the power of veto over your daughter then she is not of consentual age to donate her organs, and if that's the case, I think it is a remarkable testament to her and how you've raised her that she is capable of making such a decision to help others. I'd be proud of her and respect her wishes knowing that, if something did happen, god forbid, at least some part of her would live on assisting someone else to live.

they can chop me up and shove me in the wheely bin for all i care lol

Serioulsy its a good thing to do, i lost my son when he was a baby, its a very hard thing to do when your looking at your dead child, because all you want to do is protect them, even tho they have passed away, the thought of someone cutting him up horrified me as i think it would most people, but the thought of more children dieing, when they could be saved and more parents going tho what i was going thro hurt even more, i beleive i made the right choice

I've arranged for the transplant folks to have first choice of whatever bits they want and for the anatomists to get the rest but it's very important you ensure your next of kin are onside about this so there's no delay when the deed has to be done.

Make sure your NOK, your GP and any hospital consultant who may be looking after you knows your intentions.

Have a phobia about anything being near my eyes....they even had to sedate me the one time i went to hospital to have them flushed out.

The fear stopped me ticking the box to let them take my corneas...lol

I think organ donation should br a opt out rather than an opt in situation,,I have two daughters with cystic fibrosis, the youngest of wich will need heart lung transplant if she is to get out of her teens,so I urge eveyone I meet or come in contact with to have an organ donor card.So pleas all take time to have a think about it

I too have been a donor since teens. Also been a regular blood donor and that of plasma also. Just a real "feel good" each and everytime I donate. It to me only feels natural to help others when alive and also passed.

I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with that. Demand for blood in the UK varies and the product has a shelf-life. If it's not needed in the UK and the money raised goes back into the NHS I don't see a problem. Blood donation is something a lot of people can do again and again at virtually no risk to themselves.

I wouldn't want a US system where there's an almost open market in blood, organs and breast milk.

We are both donors, have been after a close friend had a transplant after an accident. Not saying everyone does as it’s a personal choice. But it is worth looking into with some depth to see if its something you can do.

Blood donation is always a lot easier to participate in. As long as your healthy it replaces its self and helps save life.
