Report it to police, block the number.

Same applies to emails.

I'm afraid that's probably true. Although if you're s victim of a scam a crime number helps when trying to get any money back via your bank

Good advice, especially as scam texts and emails are quite rife these days.

I tend to reply to scam texts with a curt "fuck off!", and then block their number.

One point worth remembering is that legitimate companies will not ask you to enter your personal or bank account details via a link in a message - they'll more likely tell you to login to your account on their website.

Also, some scammers are "spoofing" phone numbers, so if you get one from a number claiming to be your bank etc, and you are suspicious, or they ask for your personal details, hang up. Leave it for five minutes, in case they haven't hung up, and can still be party to your next call, and then phone your bank to confirm matters.

Not just old people. I've seen middle-aged people get caught out on easy to spot scams on Facebook.

They will also use the greed factor whereby the subject of the scam is offered money for performing a transaction. The banks are becoming less tolerant of any customers who make themselves vulnerable or are in any way complicit in a scam.

The people most likely to be caught out by scams are older people and people who believe they'll never be caught out.

We've got to the stage where we question every interaction where money, goods or services are concerned. Even so we got to the stage of making enquiries about a service offered before realising it was a scam.

One sure way of telling whether the text or email you've received is a scam is usually the lack of literacy which gives it away. Though nowadays, some of them are quite sophisticated, so be on your guard.

Yep, emails too if they are unsolicited or you don’t recognise the sender. Do not click on any links or phone numbers contained within them.
