I guess I have a curious, restless soul in that respect and I get bored with work after around 5 years or thereabouts.

"I’m an electrician, I haven’t changed careers as such but I’ve changed from working in social housing to now doing commercial / industrial The main reason was social housing was literally a race to the bottom! Quantity over quality. No pride in your work could ever be taken! " And having pride in your work is a huge motivational factor. Certainly is for me.

"I’ve worked in several different sectors but generally done a similar job. I guess the thing holding me back is salary; I can’t afford to walk in to a new job on a basic starter salary now. What job have you got in mind, OP?" For myself? I am not sure. I know what I enjoyed most looking back and that was broadly speaking, working with people. I still work with people but because it is in Technology it feels colder and more "remote" if that makes sense.

"your job? Serious question - would you consider retraining? Having retrained several times over the years in very different industries, I am curious what motivates other people. What kind of world or industry would you go into and why?" I think moving sectors is risky but I would do it if right and always retrain in skills yes For me it’s easy, I move job when I’ve done what I was brought in for and the challenges / growth / adventure has stopped or the leadership goes bad and I’m compromising myself staying. So it’s more what would make me stay when I’m done rather that what would make me leave. I don’t do ops / operate , only transform roles, but can stay 5 years often; one even 12 years.

Not my words. Curiosity and the preference for the novel enables life long learning, growth , success. So you answered your own question - only fear stops you moving
