The main reason was social housing was literally a race to the bottom! Quantity over quality. No pride in your work could ever be taken!

I'm just about to.

Today.

As to the why, my old sector had poor investment, support and thereby options and development felt stunted.

So I've landed in another completely outside my usual wheel house, and the main motivation, money, challenge, responsibility, development and options.

So yeah, let's watch this explode catastrophically.

I’ve worked in several different sectors but generally done a similar job. I guess the thing holding me back is salary; I can’t afford to walk in to a new job on a basic starter salary now.

For myself? I am not sure. I know what I enjoyed most looking back and that was broadly speaking, working with people.

I still work with people but because it is in Technology it feels colder and more "remote" if that makes sense.

I changed career just over 2 years ago after wanting to do so for long...i did nearly a year, training, everything. A major family trauma happened, due to that being more important than a job i had to step back.

I ended back at my old work place in a family run take away...

Not what i wanted but its allowed me to be at home more which is needed.

I think moving sectors is risky but I would do it if right and always retrain in skills yes

For me it’s easy, I move job when I’ve done what I was brought in for and the challenges / growth / adventure has stopped or the leadership goes bad and I’m compromising myself staying.

So it’s more what would make me stay when I’m done rather that what would make me leave. I don’t do ops / operate , only transform roles, but can stay 5 years often; one even 12 years.

Are we talking about a job or a career change? I'd change a job to move companies if I felt stagnant in my current role but it would be in the same area my career is in. I don't think I'd change me career becaus ei don't like the idea of starting from scratch.

The only thing that would make me change career is the ability to retire early and get a part time job to keep me busy

Literally just spoke to my new employer this morning. I have to go through security checks, so not expecting to get a start date till early next year but I am excited.

However I feel I’ve been working towards this new job for the last decade or so. Due to that I don’t have the apprehension a new career or job would normally bring out in me.

I’m firmly middle aged now and still feel that a new challenge is to be welcomed. Although in a few years I hope I’ll be settled in work and my personal life as well.

I am unhireable as an employee - I would drive any manager crazy and would last days in a “proper” job but I am fortunate that through a large dollop of luck and maybe a little bit of skill and insight I have managed to get myself to a position where I am more than self sufficient and I don’t have to be actively looking for a change of role.

I come from a very poor working class background and have never forgotten what it was like to grow up with nothing (but to also have had a happy childhood) and so everything I now do with my life is focussed on how I can shift some of the biggest organisations in the county to think about how they do things differently from those in society who are resource constrained. Any new role I took on would have opening up opportunities as the fundamental driver at its heart.

I've never actually retrained at any stage.

I've been in management or supervisory positions since I was 25 but never did a single training course.

In 39 years I've had 5 jobs but one of those was for 22 years and only ended due to government legislation.

The only time I've chosen to change jobs was because I didn't feel appreciated but that only lasted a year before being made redundant for the first time in my life due to covid. I now earn 2 thirds of what I was on but it's stress free.

Thank you all for participating, too many now to answer individually (which is what I always like to do) but it sounds to me that a planned retirement sounds appealing to some, others put up with some unpleasant parts of the job because it makes ends meet and then some are happy to try something new. Those working in the care/ healthcare area (and I am also thinking of people I have spoken to privately in here and outside the scene) are still bearing the after-effects of the challenging Covid times.

Some are happy to be in a job for a life time and others are continuously seeking ...

There is also a certain level of investment in a particular role that may dictate decisions.

The job I did for 22 years did not come with a big salary. In fact when the company had to close in 2013 because of legislation I was earning less than £15k as the manager.

I had been there from day one and helped grow and establish the business as the largest of its kind in NI so it wasn't about the money.

Looking at similar positions in other companies if they became available I didn't have the qualifications required or the time to gain those qualifications due to working between 70 and 90 hours a week.

There were lots of jobs I could have taken on experience alone but they were offering the same salary I was on.

When that company closed and I was lucky enough to return to the parent company where I worked before there was an immediate 50% increase in earnings which initially was amazing but that came with an increased level of expectation and stress and a constant feeling of having both hands tied behind my back while also being asked to cover for other people in different roles which in turn had a knock on effect on my ability to do the job I was being paid to do.

I vowed when I was 19 never to set foot in a classroom again because of major issues I had at school which prevented me from going to university and that is the main reason I have never retrained.

? Finally financially viable

? Family situation allows

? Better life/work balance

I’m actually starting a new career in 3 weeks time.

Completely different to what I have done for the last 20 odd years and I’m both nervous and excited. It’s the same pay but will give me more free time

Ive just left my job.

Mainly the remuneration for the increasing amount of workload didnt balance.

Plus working in the same field for 17 of the last 19 years gets old.

I earned my class 2 drivers licence this year and am changing career now while i am still young and can enjoy a new challenge

The main reason was social housing was literally a race to the bottom! Quantity over quality. No pride in your work could ever be taken! "

Also an electrician and at 54 have left industrial to do testing in social housing. More money and its just not a physical.

Mr here, I work in IT, I've never been in one role more than 3 years. Early on in my career i moved roles often and it's never bothered me changing companies.

The other thing to think about is what you do outside of work. I do a huge amount t of travel photography and make gold and silver jewellery here in Dubai , my job has to fit around and part fund my lifestyle. That doesn’t mean I would do a job I don’t like, just for money/travel , but it means my passions primarily don’t come from my work. Previously this was different I worked for charities and public sector for 1/5th of the salary and it was fine because I believed in what I was doing money wasn’t important

Bankruptcy is the only thing the would make me change what I do.

I've been running my own business in the motorcycle industry for almost 30 years. It consumes my whole life sometimes but I've been places and seen things that I would never have imagined I would do and I'm grateful for that

There's often difficult days but far more great days, I can't see me retiring anytime soon.

I trained as a chef, done sales with only half a day training but was successful and started my own business.

Now retired and wondered what would tempt me back to work and train for what?

I wish I was a designer .

I like interior , house design , n outdoors design .
