Dark matter supposedly accounts for up to 85% of the universe but it's actually never been observed or proven to exist. Similar to about 85% of the claims you read on Fab.

In simple terms it’s a theoretical thing that balances some of the holes in the Big Bang theory of the universes creation, and Einstein’s general theory.

The word dark doesn’t mean it’s black in this context. It just means they know next to nothing about it. You’ll see the term dark energy as well, which to all intents and purposes is the same thing.

The expansion of the universe is speeding up and nobody really knows why, because gravity should be slowing it down. Dark matter/energy is a theory as to why, but as with the Big Bang itself, it’s just a theory

Dark IS a descriptive term to the extent that it describes matter whose mass can be deduced, because without it the universe would not be expanding as it is according to the standard model, but which cannot be seen (so is not a star, planet, nebula, etc).

Then dark energy is even more mysterious...
