Was down in Cornwall recently and found out about this then watched this documentary it's probably the best documentary I've ever seen it blew my mind. These guys true heroes, utterly gallant and valiant next time life throws you a challenge think of them launching into 50ft waves and never coming back.

We're an island race. Our fishermen etc are heroic. Under appreciated.

Thank you for sharing this OP. An interestingly poignant story.

I've actually been to Mousehole. A sleepy, but beautiful little fishing port.

Yup, I'd have the hankies ready if you watch it. The type of bravery you only see in movies or hear of in urban legend but they showed it.

and the likes of Farage & Patel like to cast our volunteer lifeboat crew as nothing but a bunch of woke lefties a disgracefully smear

They weren't fishermen (who get paid), they were volunteers.

Very under appreciated

I've been there and seen this. Yes, a terrible, moving story.

For anyone with young children, there is a beautiful picture book called The Mousehole Cat, telling the legend of an earlier storm.

I remember it being on the news. Doesn’t seem possible that it’s so long ago.

Can’t believe it is so long ago……… Was living down in East Cornwall at the time, still remember the utter disbelief of all the locals. Where has the time gone?

BBC Radio also has a documentary about the loss of those brave men and the crew of the Union Star. I have watched the documentary on YouTube and listened to the BBC radio programme. Extremely sad especially when they ( Lifeboat ) suddenly goes silent when going to try and get the last of the crew of the ship.

Bravery above and beyond duty.

I lived in Devon and Cornwall for 25 years. I was always in admiration of the work the RNLI do.

I had a boat myself, and swore that if ever I was in trouble it was because something catastrophic like and total engine failure. I didn't want the RNLI to be called out because I hadn't been diligent.

Unfortunately there were some real dumbasses who got a boat, and went to sea, when the weather was bad. The RNLI crews put their lives at risk to save these selfish morons. So many people don't respect the power of the sea.

With something like Penlee, or a 100 years before at Lydford, the RNLI do amazing work, and it's awful when it ends in tragedy.

I lived in a fishing village, and seeing how dangerous the life of a fisherman is, I'm full of admiration for them and anyone else who earns a living at sea.

The American helicopter pilot Lt Cdr Smith involved in the rescue attempt said it was " The greatest act of courage I've ever seen and am ever likely to see..... they were truly the bravest men I've ever seen"

for the volunteers that do the saving of many all over the world.

They do a damn good job.

Its a shame that theres many within its ranks that like a high payout. ( fatcats payout reference ) not held against the crews at the lifeboat stations

I will never see the point in why they have a london office either.

you should try this then

One of my colleagues was on radio watch on one of the RNLIs permanently crewed boats that night and followed the coastguard and lifeboat messages. Then the Solomon Browne stopped responding.

It still haunts him.
