Any other "LAT" couples here?

Are there any other couples here who are married but do not live together?

We recently got engaged, but have no plans to live together. In fact, the idea is abhorrent to me!

It stands for "Living Apart Together" and is the commonly used acronym for such arrangements.

Until we started looking into it, I had no idea how "big" it is, in terms of statistics.

If we include military families and suchlike, in the UK it apparently accounts for about 10% of couples - and is increasingly popular with younger couples.

Honestly, it just makes sense to us.

Having lived with a partner previously I wouldn’t do it again! I like my own space too much to live with a partner again. Makes sense to me too!

Possibly as it's historically men who went to war, sea, travelling salesmen, rockstars, athletes and those in both navies and of course prison.

Only in recent times, have women played catch up in this.

All married couples at expected to have separate wardrobes, as this makes sense and is classed as the norm, so why not keep other things apart?

I 100% want to be like this. Partly because I like my own space to decompress. Partly because I just like having space that's MINE and I can do what I want and own it. And Partly cause I'm poly so I reckon having separate homes makes that logistically a lot easier!

Firstly it's too expensive to up sticks, every time an old relationship ends and a new one begins.

Work and career commitments dictate who lives where

If the current relationship ends, then both parties still have a home and roof over their heads (just like the angst ridden teenage years, living with mum and dad)

Time apart recharges those batteries and allows regimented me time.

The sex when meeting up again IS worth it.

Miserable marriages are the norm, especially in less progressive parts of society. Religion has a lot to answer for that one.

After living with my former abusive husband and my abusive father, the thought of living with a man makes the bile rise in my throat.

I dread if I have to become a live-in carer for my father. I don't want to but if it comes to it, my mental health is more important than his not being in a nursing home.

My mother and maybe a child I can tolerate.

Why on earther would you think that? My guess is that no one invented this, but it's been around for thousands of years.

However, in our case, I'm probably more of a catalyst than Jack. So, nope.

Because studies still show that women do and are expected to do most of the emotional labour and household chores in a couple living together....and that even before you look at childcare.

I'd rather live alone and look after myself emotionally than have to look after my emotions AND the emotions of a man too. Same with chores. I don't have children but the prospect of having them without a baby father telling me how to run my household is very appealing.
