Tesco's Meal Deal - what the actual fuck

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

It's going up to £3.40 (with a clubcard - £3.90 without).

You know what.

I can put up with a revolving door of politicians.

I can wear extra jumpers and fleece leggings and fluffy socks for a winter or two.

I'll even make the bus my second car.

But this. This is the straw that's gonna break my back.

The entire world can fuck off at this point. I'm getting into bed and I'm never coming back out.

I said to a friend earlier if we can get the fuck off this planet now please. Absolute jokes. 2 small bags of shopping cost me £70 earlier. I used to do my WEEKLY shop for less than that!!

I'm happy with that. I can get a sammidge, a pack of walkers cheese and onion crips and a drink of choice for a measly £3.40. Sammidge on its own in Asda is almost £3.

Is it though?? I think it depends what you get.

I used to get the pasta pots, a snack and a can of diet . When you factor in the cost of boiling water and cooking the pasta, plus all the ingredients you need to make the sauce, cost of soap and warm water for washing up, plus snacks and drinks even at multipack prices, it definitely comes out cheaper to get a £3 deal.

Also I make my own work lunches now, usually salads, which come out to way more than £3 per portion.

It's so shit that healthy food is still so inaccessible compared to junk.

Yes, but I'd have to still buy the crips and drink. Plus, their sammidges are so much nicer than mine. I'd have to buy a whole loaf; the meat; the mayo or caesar dressing; the lettuce and cucumber and then eat the same sammidges for days, and I can't eat lots of bread.

Not sure about the sandwiches or pasta bowls, but they do vegan and cous cous bowls, plus fruit pots for the side, and water or no sugar drinks.

Boo's World

You could easily save money by doing your own lunches during the week.

Examples could be:

Bread can be frozen so you don't have to waste buying a whole loaf and it going mouldy and wasting it.

Cans of soft drink in packs of 24 will last you for many lunches.

Big boxes of Crisps as well.

Fruit/veg/salad can be prepped and placed in water in tupperware type pots in the fridge and it can last 2 weeks before it even starts to go off.

Pasta could be cooked in bulk/portioned up in various sauces or dressings and put in the fridge and it can last for a few days, freeze it and it can last a few months.

Something like a whole chicken cooked and portioned up can make several lunches or dinners.

Same with fish.

Start bulk buying foods you like and research how to store them and you will easily save money compared to buying lunch daily.

I have a family of 5 , and I don't spend over £100 a week for all 3 meals a day for us all.

It can be done , just need to prep food and have a meal plan in place so you know what you're making each week.

When are you all going to realise they do it because they can! The only thing people do about it is complain and moan on social media lol. When people start taking action and stand up to the robbing bastards then change will come. People have the power but society has become weak with fear. Grow a pair and don't take this shit then you may see things improving.

£3.40 a day ?

So, 260 on average working days a year, that's £884.00 spent on meal deals.

My daily lunch comes to £2.25, which is a soup, crisps and bar of chocolate. I'll drink a free coffee from work with that. £585.00 a year all in.

I could easily get it down to £2.03 a day if I substituted a slightly inferior chocolate bar, saving an additional £56.88 a year.

If I chose a different, cheaper soup and went with the cheaper chocolate bar, I could do a soup, crisps and choc bar for £1.02 a day, so a yearly cost of £265.20

My friends daily limit is 37.5p a day for lunch, but he does a lot of batch cooking.

Oh how lovely a 50+ hour would be. That’s part time for both of us. Up to others to do what they with their money and time but point is it is all doable to budget and do if people still knew how to instead of a lot, certainly not all, wanting everything yesterday for nothing provided by someone else as todays society sadly seems to be. Equally wanting it all done keeps plenty of others in jobs, no right or wrong either way

Don't get the club card thing so avoid Tesco's, two tier pricing is wrong & it's just a shop so being forced to hand over personal info to get the stuff at the true cost is pretty controlling.

The penalise you if you don't conform so go to the next shop.

You can put the bread in the freezer and just get out a couple of slices when you need them. They defrost quickly enough.

"Their meal deals have been £3 for 10 years. Shows they were overpriced for the majority of that time!"

Not necessarily. To me it shows they have held off and taken the losses for as long as they can. It's now time to price them more reasonably.

It's a 30% increase in cost to the customer or approximately a 17% rise if you use your club card.

Good way of getting people to get be loyal if they get a club card and still lower than rises in other goods.

Less than 15% rise with a clubcard..... I worked on 3.50 and not 3.40

Went to get a tea from a cafe in Holland Road yesterday…tea was £3.95 wtf!?!

If that wasn’t bad enough, they wanted £5 for a chocolate eclair, £5 for a miserable looking eclair.

A tea used to be 50p or a quid for a coffee.

You know what I’m doing - a flask of tea, a shit load of stuff from Lidl and small businesses like cafes and the con artist like Nero, Starbucks, Costa can go fuck em selves

"Don't get the club card thing so avoid Tesco's, two tier pricing is wrong & it's just a shop so being forced to hand over personal info to get the stuff at the true cost is pretty controlling.

The penalise you if you don't conform so go to the next shop."

Conform? It's a loyalty bonus, which must shops have. They choose to deduct money at the till and give Clubcard points to collect. Asda have just started giving points that convert into vouchers too.

Morrisons changed their scheme so I stopped shopping there.

Lidl give discounts on particular items; most of which I never buy.

There's 3 Tesco Express near me and a 24 hr Tesco so I signed up to save money.

Why are people so obsessed with "conforming" lately.

It's about your personal info mostly.

You conform & it's mutually beneficial but I'd rather shop elsewhere & just pay for the goods anonymously without the tracking etc.

Tesco are a bit crafty with their clubcard prices I always get nobbled thinking something is cheaper as the clubcard price is usually the larger on display and the actual price without one is written in the small print. I'm all asdas basics range and yellow label bargain bins now though

Yes of course they do. For statistics, planning, strategy etc. When that data is used for those purposes it's all anonymised anyway.

But it also benefits me when I not only get money off in store but also vouchers for the things they know I like.

Never mind the 3x points converter! Got about £50 towards a hotel room at the moment

This is everywhere

I bought a plain white tee off ASOS last week for £6 full price. Went on it yesterday, the same tee is now £9 but under the 20% off banner. That still comes out to more than what I paid

That's why I never buy anything in Black Friday either. I think there's some trackers online where you can look up historic retailer prices, as most usually hike them up in the weeks leading up to it so they can offer bigger "bargains".

I only buy on sale when I'm aware of the price beforehand.

(Although in the case of the tee, it could be that they happened to hike the price and now it's £9 until they hike it again)

Can't return something you've washed, nor that has make up stains on it haha. I'll use it for PJs I guess.
