he was released from hospital last week as they could no longer treat him and it was his wish to die at home.

lied about his age so he could serve in the air force during the second world war.

and the injuries he sustained had in recent years stopped him from doing many of the things he loved.

i think im right in saying that the ussr and united states used maps made by Patrick moore.

The Sky At Night programme was one that I would always stay up for as it was always on late at night. He really brought Astronomy to life and made it interesting. Same kind of mould as Jacques Cousteau did for undersea exploration.

I'm not really one for the death of celebrities threads...but, hey..

I wasnt even a great fan of the sky at night..or gamesmaster lol..

however, loved his sharings ,enthusiasm(I love space stuff lol).

I think he's been the savior of many insomniacs! RIP sir!

I watched the last Sky at night and he looked very fragile. Wonderful that an 'amateur' should be so respected and loved by world experts and academics.

Amazed this thread's got this far and not one joke about Uranus....

More or less grew up with Sir Patrick, as I was obsessed with the Apollo program as a kid back in the 60's. He always put me in mind of a 'proper' school master who commanded respect through sheer knowledge of his subject and the way in which he put it over.

Saddest thing about him for me, was that he never married. Saw him inter_iewed about 20 years ago when he explained why. "I met the girl of my dreams when I was a young man. Unfortunately she was killed in the Blitz and I never looked for anyone else - as no one else could come close to her".

Well, you're back with her now....

I admired him for many things but mostly because he was an individual in a world where very few are. He refused to pronounce Uranus in the non rude way and that in itself makes him a legend in my eyes. R.I.P.

Just rumours on another forum but my faith in public figure morality is at an all time low right now.

Get a grip on yourselves people, if you have nothing respectful to say, please move on.

This giant of both science (who's moon maps were used in the apolo programme) and broadcasting (the longest serving TV presenter in history and likely to stay that way) will be sadly missed by many. RIP

It's an open forum, read the rules and respect peoples right to have a _iewpoint without telling them they can't have one.

A true British eccentric, unlike the plastic TV personalities we're fed these days (Brian Cox for example). No formal qualifications in astronomy or in playing the xylophone but a real expert in both. He was a bomber navigator from 1940 to 1945 and always wore his RAF tie and blazer. What a great man, RIP.
