That will include ads in the middle off movies and such for £4.99

Why is offering a cheaper alternative bad? I'm sure they would rather people pay £4.99 than drop it altogether

It's such a minimal reduction in cost for additional annoyance whenever watching anything. Hardly seems worth taking that offer.

(Also, it's a bloody cheek to charge people to watch adverts. And I know others have done this. It does not make it right.)

Depends on the way they do it if it’s youtube like then it could be bad

A 30 seconds ad ever 10 or 20 minutes for £4.99

Freevee do exactly that, for nothing. As the name implies. Okay, the films exactly aren't top notch but neither is Netflix's really. Freevee does have brand new Judge Judy though, that's worth a look at least.

They're also reducing the amount of available films for the cheaper option. Considering they don't have most of what you want to watch it seems like a massive con

Ads will be 15-30 seconds and play before and during content. It will be interesting to see how many there are. People opting for the ads should be told how often they play though to give them accurate info to make a decision

For the basic plan without adds and full content it's £6.99 per month.

6.99 without ads for the basic option

4.99 with ads

There are some more expensive options as well

I would rather pay an extra £2 a month to be able to get full access to all the content and have no ads. Sometimes if we are going away or nothing we know we want to watch is being released I will cancel it for a month. We probably do that about 3 times a year.

The new version also doesn't allow downloads so you couldn't grab some episodes of a series to watch on a train journey, for example

Starting in 2023 they are going to stop release if full season at ones and go to one episode a week

That's going to be annoying as sometimes you just want/need to binge watch.

Ours is also with the tv package, so will have to wait and see. No doubt sky will try and increase their prices for it!

Thin end of the ad wedge. It will only get worse from here.

Had a subscription for years but will drop it tomorrow once the ads creep in to other packages.

I'd want assurances of how regularly and for how long these adverts run.

I started watching the Al Jazeera Labour Files videos on YouTube recently. There are 4 videos at around 80 minutes an episode.

The first video ran with a couple of adds at the start and then no more. The second and third would regularly stop for ads and in both instances for around the last half hour there were ads every 5 minutes. It actually made me stop watching before I finished all 4 videos.

I think this might be a massive owngoal for netflix. They've deliberately made a worse version of their service and asked people to pay for it - if at a slightly reduced rate.

But who wants a worse service?

So I think this will only piss some people off + help drive them to piracy.

I suspect so. It was leaked at the beginning of the year that they were going to do this too. The 'leak' was probably also to get people used to the idea and also gauge reactions.

We have come full circle back to cable/sky TV. Streaming will become an ad infested hellscape until the next big disrupter comes along.

The difference in cost is so minimal I think that argument doesn't apply.

To avoid adverts, you'd only have to pay twenty four quid a year more than the cheapest version with ads.
