CAZ ( Clean Air Zone)

What do people feel about this in many UK cities.

So basically people with petrol and diesel cars older then 2008 I think will be charged approx £10 a day if they go into the Clear air zone of these cities. Very much like the London congestion charge.

So the people who will be charged are the poor people who can't afford new cars ,this will make them even poorer whilst the guy in his Porsche will not be charged

You can pick up a 2009/10 car for peanuts nowadays which you’ll also find are a lot cheaper to tax and therefore negating any penalty for being “poor”

I’ve started using park and rides more in such cities. What confuses me is that in cities that have charges, I have never seen anyone out scrubbing the air clean?

Wetherspoons n primark n Greggs and Aldi n Lidl will trow they shops to the out skirts of town cause no fucker goes in there …

Went through the one in Birmingham the other week in a family members car thinking it’d be cheaper than my diesel.

Typed the reg in (it’s a 2018 petrol) and it cost me £12

Political policy shifts crack me up.

I have a 2012 diesel (Euro 4) that I only have to pay £30 a year to tax, yet from November will have to pay £9 every time I drive into Bristol.

I'll just not go.

Got done in Birmingham on a night out as the designated driver! Drove in about 7pm and left at 1am. Paid before I left thinking it would last 24hrs from payment nope you pay until midnight and you have to pay again. One fine later and I learnt my lesson!

Not in favour of it. They are bringing it up here in Newcastle but it is in the wrong place, it is in place for the centre of Newcastle.

Newcastle City Centre is not where people live and the public transport system is already pretty good but there is the central motorway running right through the centre of the city which is going to be part of the charging area.

So traffic which wishes to avoid the system will bypass the city centre and be forced onto the outer roads which is where most of the population lives so we allow a few people shopping or getting pissed in the bars to breathe clean air whilst forcing our kids in the schools and playing outside in the surrounding suburbs to suffer from even more pollution from traffic fumes.

London there are potentially 3 charges you will be caught by.

The LEZ, ULEZ and the congestion zone.

The ULEZ cover the vast majority of London.

I think it definitely has caused a lot of people not to drive their cars as much but the problem is nothing was done to help with the public transport. I'm all for encouraging people to use their cars less but we need to seriously invest in public transport.

I think it's an absolute liberty.

Especially with the price of new cars these days. Anyone with an older car is fooked.

My car doesn't get charged, but if it did, I'd very rarely go to town, because I detest public transport, apart from trains. Other doing this would then affect the high street shops and eateries.

I drive a 20year old car it’s taxed insured and flew through its MOT last month so it’s all legal, so I should be able to drive it anywhere in this country on any public highway, it’s totally ridiculous that if I go into Birmingham on a night at say 10pm and come out after midnight I have to pay the CAZ charge twice, also the traffic around the ring road is worse than it’s everbeen because lorries can’t drive through from the a38m Aston expressway on to the a38 Bristol road via the tunnels. And that’s not mentioning the midland metro tram construction work that’s been going on for years and all the cycle lanes that have appeared everywhere

It is purely a way of collecting extra revenue by using as an excuse a cause most people won't argue with.

Let us be honest, with all these polluting cars driving far further round the outside of the ULEZ their polution will seep into the ULEZ anyway.

If the councils were using the money to clean the air or even maintain the streets it may be ok. However I am sure councils like Glasgow City will use it to fund "fact finding" visits to the Seychelles or Rio de Janiero.

Same here, and most people I know the same. The lost revenue must be enormous and I bet businesses are losing out big time. We used to go into the city for shopping, dining and nights out, but not any more.

They will keep extending it the same as London, soon you won’t be able to drive anywhere.

I use to always go the the BBB and after party, in Birmingham city centre. Every 3rd Sunday month.

It was about £15 entry for the day and after party

Carparking was about £12 in the multistory

Fuel in my car would have been no more than £20

Drinks, food, guess a modest £10

So about £60 once a month and it was fab.

Then the ulez charge was introduced and my much loved VW mk5 diesel I think was £12 a day x2 as the after party goes past midnight (2am). So £24

That would turn my acceptable £60 day out to brum into an £85 day. I've not been since and have no intention of going.

I can go to Blackpool for the weekend for that, and get free entry into one of the best swingers clubs around. I've heard Birmingham City centre has lost lots of trade

In Scotland it’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

Diesel car and vans need to be at the Euro 6 standard mainly applied to vehicles registered after 2015. Vehicles that do not meet the emission standards set for a LEZ will not be able to drive within the zone.

This applies to all except for vehicles that are exempt including emergency services and any vehicles driven by a blue badge holder.

If your vehicle isn’t up to standard the initial penalty charge is £60, if the penalty isn’t paid within 28days, the second time the vehicle enters the LEZ with 90 days the penalty doubles to £120, if the vehicle enters a third time in the same 90 days, it increases to £240….. money making scheme

Wonder how long it will last?

Maybe if they didn’t spend what little money we have on trams that no one wants, we wouldn’t need these ridiculous money making schemes….
