This is the first year I'm in my own flat for Xmas and so am really giving my Christmas tree lots of thought. Did Mum's last night which is real with a multitude of colours on it including an empty pair of boots to symbolise Dad not being there but also the fact that he always used to take his shoes off after Christmas dinner because he ate too much!!

What do other forumites go for? Real/fake? Black/white/pink? Colour co-ordinated or everything on!?

Ive just got a 4ft one this year, always have artificial. It has a mixture of everything, some are expensive baubles and some are from wilkinsons. It has two sets of lights and a bit of tinsel. It looks jolly enough.

Our tree is fake, green, fits in the corner. Multicoloured lights and a ton of red gold and silver baubles. Had a crap few christmas's but this one is better so I'm enjoying being tacky and xmassy.

Sounds lovely. My current thinking is to go for a 4ft fake one with red and silver on it. But then I see other people's and change my mind!

I have 8 trees in the attic, all different colours. Opted for a 5ft slim red tree, silver decorations, white lights

The boots is such a lovely token.

I've had to get new stuff ... really.hard cause ide built so much up over the years.

I've opted for a 6ft artificial green tree with cream\gold decorations, beads and clear lights

Crackling-Perky is doing mine as we speak! Well, er... type.

Same BandQ Value 5 footer we have had now for the 3rd Xmas.

But she doesn't know I am taking her this afternoon to see a 'Christmas Tree' which beats all previous records when it comes to tackiness.......

Mum has a real one and by the time Christmas comes the bloody thing will be bald. I had to crawl underneath it to stop the naff lights Dad bought from singing (he did kitsch sooooo well!)

We have an artificial one, it has a wide and varied assortment on it. Every year since my kids were little they always chose a new dec each for the tree, so I see it a a tree through the ages x, and my kids have started this with thier kids x

I like that idea. Mum and I purposefully chose new decs last year. B&Q were doing a 3 for 2 so we got the aforementioned boots, a rather tacky but wonderful leopard print bauble and a rather cute felt christmas tree. The boots were the last on this year. We did that together.

caring for your tree.

I would recommend a nordman fir.

All real trees whether cut or living need water and plenty of it. They can drink up to a pint a day. A bit of lemonade every now and then is good as they love the sugar. Even your tree likes a drink at xmas, a job for the kids.

If its on a block of wood put it in a bucket with some sand. Cover the block of wood for stability and so the base can drink. You can decorate the bucket.

Dont put your tree near a radiator.

If you have a larger tree and need a stand make sure its a stand that you can put water in.

If you get a live tree with the intention of planting it after xmas there is a chance it wont survive as they damage the root stock badly when harvesting. To give your live tree the best chance do not plant it outside right after xmas. It will need at least till march in a conservatory or somewhere cool but sheltered.

Taking it from a warm room and sticking it out in the freezing cold will kill it stone dead unless you are lucky.

If you get a spruce tree, the traditional looking one with sharp needles, do not get it untill as close to xmas as possible as they shed needles like theres no tomorrow.

Spruce trees need more water than fir trees.

With either type of tree you should remove the bark from the lower part of the trunk, at least 3 inches and also cut off and inch from the bottom. This will help the tree drink.

Your local council should have some sort of recycling scheme for the tree when its all over.

This year we have a 7ft real tree. I've changed the scheme this year from jewel colours, to very traditional (rocking horses, soldiers, berry type decorations) all in red & white with white lights. No tinsel on my tree, I think it looks a bit tacky. Lots of new baubles but a mixture of cheap ones and some not so cheap from the Brugges and Bath Christmas markets this year.

The tree's been up with the lights on Since Sunday - this afternoon I'm going to get around to decorating it lol.

A 3 ft woolies special that I bought when the cats were kittens just in case they wrecked it but it's such a nice one it's lasted eleven years.

White lights and an assortment of decs in red, green and gold with gold tinsel.

And special decs that we give and get in our stockings every year that make me smile (multicoloured knitted one for example).

Six foot artificial with hot pink decorations, white lights and silver accessories. Gave my tree and all my decorations to my daughter a few years ago when she started moved out. Had to do a rush buying spree to replace them when my little lad came to live with me and too hard up to replace them all this year to have a change in colour scheme.
