Got an email yesterday allegedly from someone we know asking if we could help them out to pay for an Apple gift card for someone who had cancer. Contacted our friend who was aware her email account had been hacked and all the contacts in her account had received the same request for money. The scam has been traced to someone from Dublin.

Be aware and don't respond to anything like this. It is a total scam

Anyone requesting via text, email etc that you buy them gift cards is a scammer, regardless of whether they are in your contacts or not

Fox had the 'Hi mum I'm messaging from a friends phone as mines broken' scam message on WhatsApp yesterday.

Obviously fake as he doesn't have a smartphone that allows apps and just a shit mobile for texting/calling in emergencies.

I'm amazed when people get taken in by that one. Our kids wouldn't say 'Hi mum' they'd refer to their friend by name and they certainly wouldn't know my number if their phone was broken.

Yep. He barely remembers stuff for school so remembering a phone number would never happen.

I did think for a split second it was just a cunning plan and he'd deliberately smashed his shit phone in the hope of getting a shiny new one.

The scammers possibly work on a 'if we get 1 or 2 % ' then that'll do, sadly some of those will be the elderly or the vulnerable..

I think no matter how aware or astute you are, the sheer number of scams, variety of them and the sheer inventiveness of the scammers, means that most of us will get caught out at some point. Particularly if it's a new one.

Especially the phone number! I only know phone numbers from 30 years ago before I had a mobile phone.

All my elderly people have simple phones without internet. But the scammer bastards can still send texts to say there's an issue with their bank account and to call X number.
