5 billion phones will be thrown away in 2032. 5 billion phones! Isn't that a rather depressing thought.... For all the talk of saving the planet... 5billion in one year alone.

If they largely get recycled it would be fine, that’s a lot of jobs in designing, testing, manufacturing, logistics, marketing, selling phones in that market. I’ve no idea how many do tho.

According to the story... 17% of ewaste is recycled. 5.3 billion phones were not recycled in 2022. I mean for a start off that means pretty much 6.6 billion handsets were discarded this year alone. That's nearly the entire population?!

World population was 7.93 billion last estimate, so yea, a lot of phones, seems like too many!

The fault lies with manufacturers who build in obsolescence to their products and rush out a new phone, instead of working with what they have for longer.

Partly yes. It's a double edged sword though with the trendies demanding the latest iPhone launch just because... And the manufacturer and marketeers responding to that demand for fashion. And yes alongside built in hardware and software obsolescence... The performance handcuffs that apple build in their operating systems as only one example.

I put my old ones out with the recycling same with all small electrical items they go off for stripping and the precious metals ect are separated off.

Usually keep my phones for 4 years and then they go in to a draw. I’ve got quite a few

For any tech that stores data, if I’m going to get rid of it, gets “impact” wiped before any recycling.

Well if they want more products recycled then they should pay better

I have 6 iPhones just sitting on a table doing nothing

They all still work but I refuse to do anything with them

Because off the price they give

You pay close to 2k for a handset these days

And when you go to re new in a years time or 2 years time they offer you like £600

And if it’s got one tiny scratch on it that £600 gose down to £100 and they always find that

Maybe if they offered me £900 for it and don’t complain that it has a couple off scuff marks

They may get more phones recycled

They all want to cry foul that people aren’t doing they best to get e waste off the street

But at the same time offering dog shit money for expensive tech

Why would the manufacturer want you to recycle? It requires us to own the problem... An example being you've got 6 perfectly functioning phones on your table but still chose to spend 2k on a new one. If we stopped buying stuff we don't need it may help a bit.
