On BBC1 you had Basil Brush, followed by Jim’ll Fix It (hey, it was obvious he was a bit of wrong ‘in even back then, but nevertheless..), the Doctor Who and a bit later Blankety Blank.

Or maybe over on ITV you had Metal Mickey, or 3-2-1, followed by Battlestar Gallactica or Buck Rogers ..

Once upon a time Life (Biology)

This was a pan European cartoon series that opened up with Bach's Fugee in the opening scenes, showing the start of the planet and how humans just evolved their transport, before jumping into a rocket to escape the mess they left behind. Kabooom.

That was just the 30 second intro.

Taking a leaf out of the Carry On book of casting, you would see the same characters in the same typecast roles.

Analogies are a brilliant way of learning as history will always repeat itself. So each episode was a different event in history, which meant it was easy to predict and understand what was coming next.

We need this to come back on telly.

This program was miles ahead of the opposition (I never saw Childrens' Ward) for showing grown up scriptwriting. This beat Drop The Dead Donkey, I've got that on DVD too.

Kids bing grown ups: grown ups being like kids: if this was on the Beeb nowadays, they would have mashed them together for Children in Need.

Jim Sangster and Paul Condon wrote the almost perfect guide to British telly through the years.

TV Heaven (ISBN 0007190999) is a beautiful rabbit hole of their extensive knowledge ofa programme's background, broadcasting details, plot summary and cast often including rerference and other trivia.

At the risk of sounding like an online review, it's a great book to have in a pub quiz.

Think IMDM in a book, a thick heavy one at that.
