What jobs/profession allow you to get away with being utterly incompetent with very little personal consequence?

I'll get the most obvious one out that way first and say any politician/government role, and I'll also add banker and tabloid journalist to the list.

Teachers - a minority of course but there are some truly awful ones who clearly hate children and hate the job and it’s near impossible to get rid of them if they just turn up.

I’m picking on them because they have such an important responsibility and good ones can be such a positive impact children's lives , every child deserves great teachers.

Some senior levels of the public sector…you’d be surprised how some people are promoted just through standing in the right spot and how many very talented people who could really make a massive difference to how the public is catered (health, social care and welfare) CANNOT be replaced soo will not get promoted.

Soo many senior people haven’t got a clue but look the part

Where I work upper management totally incompetent. What makes it worse is the fact that they are promoting youngsters to managers and they have no skills to actually deal with people or the business. They are not proactive and not problem solvers.

This is my opinion without being offensive to any young person. Very few actually carry the job well but most only there to get a good salary.

In every organisation I ever worked for incompetent people were being protected. Partly because the people immediately in charge of them were afraid to begin the process that would get rid of them. This was because they are under pressure to keep their superiors happy and that includes pretending that everyone who works for them is good.

The number of educators who are not only incompetent but downright dangerous is staggering

This.Often in healthcare the field I work in,I regularly see people who get promoted to a high level and absolutely have no idea what they're doing in the role.i feel like they sometimes don't know what else to do with some staff who aren't that good at hands on clinical stuff ,so promote them to a role that's less so ,but not always needed.

I've got to include football managers in here. You can be utterly rubbish in a job, get an amazing payout when you're sacked, and within weeks you are usually hired by another club of a similar level/wage

Prepared to be lynched for criticising the NHS but it's full of people who don't know or don't care what they're doing. I've had one experience after another where I've been patronised, dismissed, ignored or given really bad advice. The difference when you see a private practitioner is incredible.

Some of the people in mental health care was my 1st thought too when i saw this thread. Although maybe not so much incompetence, just downright not being in the right job for them. How can you expect to care for people in MH crises when you have zero empathy or listening skills. Ive had not just unhelpful but downright dangerous 'help', and so have friends. Why would you go into any caring profession when you dont care about people, and then on top to be allowed to stay there? X

But since we all clearly believe we’re not incompetent, are ‘senior’ managers somehow reprogrammed on promotion?

Presumably you chose a private practitioner who doesn’t also work for the NHS. Many do, and often the only real difference for your money is the more generous consultation time it buys.

I don't know whether he did NHS work or not, but the consultation was much quicker because he actually listened to my problem and prioritised my wishes instead of spending the time telling me I was wrong and refusing everything I asked for.

I’m not sure it’s down to a profession/job as such. Incompetent people exist in all sort of roles and if they are savvy and incompetent then they’re onto a winner because they manage to go on undetected

No, they just put their personal advancement, and compliance with unrealistic policies, before their responsibility to get the job done properly.

Those who actually care about the job being done properly, i.e. effectively, rarely progress beyond the practitioner/lower-middle management stage. Certainly in the public sector where most of my experience is.

National politicians can be kicked out of an 80k job every four or five years, hardly no consequence. Banking is a ruthless profession, no one survives long unless they perform. The media is similar.

The most protected jobs are in the public services where it's incredibly hard to be sacked and promotion is often on personal rather than professional grounds. My experience is that many excellent people quit public sector early due to the incompetence they have to work with.

My mate worked for them for several years and had several instances where someone got a job as daddy had friends in the organisation- they didn't have a clue what they were doing and just caused havoc on set, but because of the old boys network, they didn't get sacked, they got promoted elsewhere to fuck up another section...and so on...always blaming the lower staff and crew for the problem

I don’t know if I would call my immediate superior/boss incompetent at his field as I would have no clue (he’s an engineer) but it is painfully obvious to a few people at work that he’s disorganised, hopeless at communicating what he wants, idiotically sarcastic (he makes comments about my field of work which is technical translation and he’s clueless about it) and there doesn’t seem to be anybody who could keep him in check….

Most of our mid managers have only got there because they have put the years in. A lot never learned anything in those years and are just treading water until they retire. They will not allow changes because "this is the way we've always done things". The senior management come and go, staying for between 5 and 8 years. They trust the "knowledge" of the mid management, but know nothing of the production processes and are in effect being lied to.

Anyone that comes in from outside with any knowledge who wants to get things improved is just ground down. You can only bang your head against a brick wall so many times.

Add early years to that! I've seen too much incompetence over the years I could write a book. Despite systems in place to prevent it the sector is on it's knees with staff shortages there is no time and no staff to replace and when we do address it we have people blame their mental health which again puts constraints on how we deal with them.

But the way Truss is going there will not be an early years before long
