Does society influence what we find attractive?

Just a quick thought, do you think society has a great influence over what we find attractive?

Examples being the Romans disliked breasts so women would disguise them or try to be as flat chested as possible (a huge sin in my book lol).

In the 18th century being BBW was considered very sexy and splashed all over the glossy magazines (ok, if they had mags they would have), whereas today, being slim, athlectic is considered very sexy and splashed all over the glossy mags.

Just a breakfast perusal....

Roman women disguised their breasts because it was a sign of wealth insofar as they could afford a milk nurse to breastfeed their babies. Fat women later on were popular because it was a sign of wealth insofar as they could afford to eat lots. For me, personality and character comes before looks.

I am yet to totally define what I find attractive in physical terms.

I am not a 'shag anything' merchant by any means but what I find attractive is both wide and varied.

To that end, in my case, I can say that I have not (yet) been shaped by what I am supposed to find attractive.

Picking up one what you say though, I would say that some do people do pick their partners and playmates because others will find them attractive.

They want their friends to be slightly envious that they have landed a catch. I have seen both men and women fall into this 'trap'.

Society does to an extent, but I think media shapes opinions far more so.

I think society does to an extent and media obviously reaches everywhere including our psyche.

For instance I watched Nicki Minaj in a bikini last night on the telly. Shit has that woman got junk in her trunk!

So today I am only interested in women who have arses the size of planets.

See it works!

I am immune to the banal and tiresome influences of society and the media and am quite capable of reaching my own decisions uninfluenced.

Nicki Minaj you say, Funky? Just Googling it now...

I daresay for some it does.

It doesn't work that way for me as it's not the media who will be taking off my knickers, but someone I personally find extremely hot!

I think its a mixture with media...Not just that, but individual cultures too.

I have a shaved head, and what media and society say about that is I'm not a woman or feminine enough. As, they say hair, reflects female beauty (I don't mean just hair that reflects it). Well, that's how I feel anyway.

I like what I like but you may have a point with the lack of pubes now compared to the 70's. Many find them disgusting these days but back then it was ok.

If society had a great influence on what we find attractive, surely the majority of us would all find the same people attractive but we dont. We all have our own idea's about attraction.

Very good illustration of the point there.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Society does affect what one thinks of as attractive. Look at black women lightening their skin and straightening their hair. Or the aforementioned bald pubis. Or even Bussy's tale of the friend having to 'come out' about fancying fatter people.

We also have something innate about what we find personally attractive. Some of that might be about our pheremones and what we imprinted on when young.

When you find the right person it doesn't matter what they look like, you just know they are beautiful and you are attracted to them.

You only have to look at the news stands and internet to see how fickle fashion and trends dictate what we should look like, act like and be as fake as the airbrushed beautiful crowd.

Well I used to meet a traveller for fun , and find heavily tattooed women very sexy, so I don't think I go for what society says.

I have very strong personal taste, and know what I like and dislike, regardless of trends and fashions.

This applies to all aspects of my life, and not just my taste in gents.
