Ok joking apart I am naturally driven and so find it easy to motivate and drive others. I do tend to lead in most things but really don't like to be out front on my own.

Self perception is always interesting. I dont think you have to be all one or the other but I guess I am like many I see myself at some peg on the scale I do wonder often how others see me.

I believe we are as much how others perceive us as how we perceive ourselves. Self-deception is another thing entirely.

When I go into organisations to look at their leadership and management it always surprises me that managers think they are the leaders when it is often clearly their assistant or someone else not in a management position.

Well I can agree with that totally as I have had it happen a few times. It always makes me wonder how one got there but not the other.

I think with me this is a bit of a sliding scale ... depends upon the dynamics of the group ... if I'm the most dominant in the group I'll happily take the lead ... but if there's someone either louder or more experienced I'll follow like a good girl.

I think this bears some relationship to our sub/dom tendencies in that we all have a little of each in us and it depends on who we're with as to what role we play.

Its a good way of looking at it. If you are not precious about being one or the other doing it that way you can be most beneficial for the group.

spot on

At work my job means sometimes i have to follow: my boss gives the orders and we do what we do as sometimes there is no time to debate the pros and cons of an action. Thats not to say we are sheep tho, just disciplined.

My own part-time job (my own firm) makes me a leader*

In the real world its a mixture, depending on the situation and simply whether I can be arsed. A lot of people who clamour to be leaders are gobs-on-sticks, usually those who can just *do* and others follow based on example.

*I'm the Boss. Also the worker, tea boy and secretary. The pleasure of being self-employed

This reminds me of that bit in Life of Brian when Brian says "You're all individual" and the entire crowd say "Yes, we're all individual" apart from one person who then pipes up "I'm not..."

To that end, I'm a recalcitrant follower with no gumption or desire to lead anything. I prefer to be led and thought for and to hide anonymous among the masses of like-minded folk. I'm part of the great unwashed - cannon fodder - the mindless majority who like to be told what to do, when though not necessarily why.

Of course all that changes if you are leading a charge against the local Cadbury's factory where the thought of getting my hands on a lifetimes supply of Wispa's is likely to turn me almost Churchillian in my leadership prowess.

I was more or less called a rebel by one of my ex-bosses. Allegedly I had "influence", and when I said I was not keen on the ideas from the brown-noses and arse-lickers within the corporate food chain, the others would follow, and I was told to be more supportive etc...

It depends on the situation I'm presented with. Following the right people can be good especially if they have the tools that could make you a leader. Just to say your a leader because you can shout above everybody else only makes you look like a fool in front of the very people you want to lead. I believe to be a leader you have to Inspire trust, Listen, Clarify positive purpose and Unleash talent then can one call themselves a "Leader"

That's a good way of looking at it you can lead by supporting someone who is a designated leader.
